You're clearly using the wrong mail server.
You need to set your mail client to the mail server appropriate to your ISP. Without knowing your provider, I can't tell you what that would be, but they should have given you that info when you signed up.
Alternatively, you can use a remote mail server if it supports SMTP Authentication. In the case of your mac.com account, you can set your Outgoing mail server to 'smtp.mac.com', but you'll need to use SMTP Authentication using your mac.com username and password to be able to use it as an outgoing server.
All in all, these are good things and are designed to combat spam, so work with them.
