They are overdue. But the only thing Apple can really do just now is swap out the 9400M for a 320M.
If they used an i3, they'd have to use a dedicated GPU which would push up costs and may be too much in terms of heat and power draw.
It may be that Apple plans to use the upcoming AMD/ATI fusion chips. But that is a bigger deal than a MacBook Air update, and the Pros have only been done quite recently. I suspect a minor bump with the 320M and if they can squeeze it out of the Core 2 Duo, maybe a few extra MHz. I can't see the higher spec version topping 2.33GHz though.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

I don't see them shrinking the screen either to be honest. It will stay at 13" IMO.

Apple could rely on the i3 alone. But they would have to make very clear that this limits the Air's processing prowess, with the tradeoff permitting longer battery life or an even smaller form-factor. It would kill the machine's gaming potential, but if the machine became cheaper, smaller, and thinner, some people might think it's right for them.

I think the Air is sexy as hell, but I went with the 13" Alu MacBook as a better value.

This delay in upgrading the Air will hurt sales once/if the upgrade arrives but it won't hurt Apple laptop sales in general.

Like many people I have been waiting and waiting for the upgrade and gave up when I saw the new 13" spec was still C2D. I didn't want all the extras of a MBP but it was the only Apple option if I want i5 or i7.
