Mod Lounge is too upper-class for us. It's just "Moderators". Don't tell anyone.

My highlight was the time Wlonh reported me to the secret service. So fun.

I chatted regularly with wlonh around that time. And I have no idea who made the Secret Service report. I found out by reading the thread.

Here's a snap of my daughter climbing onto a shelf with my G3 tower back in 2003.

She turned 20 yesterday.

The G3 tower is now in the garage (seven garages later) with the rest of the defunct tech.

This is easily one of my Top 3 and most beautiful Macs ever built. The G4 towers that followed it were much more conservative and less playful. Ease of use for maintenance was second-to-none, you pull the latch and it opens.

Time flies. I can't believe our daughter is 4 now, it seems as if she was born yesterday.

My favorite of that design was the Quicksilver, but I’m sure I’m biased because that’s what I had.

Pics? jk.

I had a quicksilver for a while... it was okay but man the 2010 mac pro takes the cake for me. So minimal and well built. Wish I could just upgrade the MOBO and CPU to something modern and keep the form factor.

I went from a Power Computing PTP to the Quicksilver, so that was a dream upgrade.

Then I got out of video for a bit and didn’t need the big iron. When I got back in the only Mac Pro was the trashcan. Almost bought one. Glad I didn’t.

My first Mac was a 2006 vintage 15” MBP. I still have it, though I’m not sure what to do with it. Maybe load Raspberry Pi Desktop on it or something…. The VA bought it for me for my grad school program. The counselor said “what computer do you want?” I said “an Apple MacBook Pro” and that was it. Wow. I thought the 15” MBP was big until I saw a classmate’s 17” MBP. Not quite big enough to surf with, but put legs on it and it’s a good table for two in most bars…

Heh. I went from a PowerComputing PowerCenter straight to a 2x2 PowerMac G5. Lordy, it was like jumping to light speed

I’m not sure if the PowerCenter was the same, but right out of the box I was smitten by how easy it was to put in RAM on the Quicksilver: release the latch and put in the RAM.

The PTP had more than 20 steps. I counted.

I did like Power Computing’s Lichtenstein influenced ads tho.

Yes, no more teenagers!

When my wife was pregnant with our daughter, and we had a few name ideas, I ran a poll on this forum.

So in a way, the members here kinda named our daughter.

The PowerCenter was relatively easy to do anything to. Undo a few screws on the back and slide the shell off the chassis. Everything was right there. Adding RAM was a simple matter, as was changing video cards. Changing the hard drive was a bit more difficult, but not bad.

The G5, though, was simple as pie. It had the same design ideas as your Quicksilver. Lower the outer door. Lift out the plastic airflow thingie. And there everything was. The best part about the modularity, imho, was you could simply slide-out the fans and give them a good cleaning. In addition to my home G5, I had one at work, and whenever the IT Manager From Hell started giving me grief about my “toy” computer, I would just start taking it apart and putting it back together without any tools. He never had a good comeback to that.

I often wish Apple had taken that design ethos and used them in the iMac. The only bit they carried-over was the easy-to-change RAM, and they eventually killed that off, too.

Yeah… that sounds reasonable. The PTP was ridiculous by comparison. It was this cascading install where there was some structural cross-member in the way of the RAM slots which needed removal, and to get at the screws for that you had to yank something else in the way, which had stuff in the way of that.
