Apple's new Tiger section lists Quartz Extreme as one of the new features, but the description seems to be the same thing we've had since Jaguar. Maybe it's a little early to ask, but does anybody know if Quartz 2D Extreme made it into the final cut? I wouldn't be too shocked if it didn't, but a page apparently touting a 2-release-old feature seems a little odd to me. So, any first-hand accounts?

Yeah this was one of the first things I read up on Apple's new OS X site. My hope would be that it did make it in because I'd like to see better scrolling and responsiveness within the OS. However, my guess would be that this was just taken from Jaguar/Panther and was included for the sake of consistency.

And the fact that the competition still haven't copied this feature and want to reiterate the fact that Apple had it first

The Quartz Extreme page says Quartz 2D several times.

Yes, but nowhere does it talk about Quartz 2D Extreme.

Because it sounds stupid and leaves Tiger open to pi55 taking.

Accelerating drawing operations through the graphics card sounds stupid?

Better scrolling? No matter what I do I can't seem to get the pointer and the scroll bar 'out of sync' if I grab it in Panther.

Perhaps, but passmaster16 list a DP1.8GHz PowerMac G5 as one if the machines.

For some reason it scrolls much smoother by grabbing, however I ususally use the scroll wheel on my mouse.

Using the scroll wheel you jump one line at the time just as using the keyboard. That's not smooth, but it isn't intended to be either.

There's another thread here that indicates Quartz 2D Extreme is turned off by default in Tiger. Apart from that, there's just speculation as to why.

I think the previous poster was referring to arrow button scrolling, which is piss poor slow in Safari, for example (but as fast as it should be in other apps). That fact has actually changed my scrolling habits - I'm much more likely to use either the thumb or page up/page down, which is totally fluid for most everything.
