I was under the impression that having Airplay on my iPhone would let me send audio from my phone to an Airplay enabled speaker system... but now it looks like maybe it only works from a Mac?

Looking at the tech specs from this speaker...

iHome: Discover: AirPlay

And the info on Apple's site...

Apple - iTunes - AirPlay

Makes it sound like it does less than I thought it was going to do.

I want a speaker system that I can make work using just my phone. Audio goes from my phone to the speakers. Is Airplay going to do this or not?

Are there any details yet on this or are we going to have to wait for 4.2 to drop?

My sig is 1 pixel too big.

The question is whether Airplay will be in iOS 4.2. If so, then yes, all you would need is your phone.

Airplay is similar to Foreplay but on an airplane.

I can do this already using my Airport Express...how is AirPlay different, aside from having the capability built in to the receiving speakers?

Airport Express capabilities are a subset of what AirPlay does. Airport Express can wirelessly play audio pushed from iTunes. AirPlay does that too, but also plays audio pushed from iPods, iPhones, and iPads. Also, AirPlay can do everything with video as well.

^^^ I agree. Here's how I see it:

Current "Airplay"

* Music only
* streaming FROM Macs only
* streaming TO ATV or APExpress

Future Airplay (iOS 4.2)

* Music and Video
* streaming from Macs, iPods, iPads and iPhones
* streaming TO ATV or APExpress (Macs, iPhones, iPads ???)

AirPlay is super cool. That's what it is.
(Esp. after the 4.2 and 4.1 updates to iDevices and AppleTV respectively.)
