Just asking to make sure: did you partition your hard drive?
It's something Windows users love to do when they switch to Mac, and it's completely pointless for all but *very* specific needs.

What app(s) are you using when this happens?

Run Disk Utility, select the internal drive and Repair Permissions before and after every installation of every kind. Probably will not help here as a fix but it cannot hurt.
Make sure that the OS is current via Software Update.
IMO every Mac owner should own and regularly use Disk Warrior. Make sure you buy the right version for your OS.
Good luck!

Not this again.
1. The OP is saying that his disk is getting reported as being full. Permissions are not going to affect the amount of free space on the drive at all.
2. Running Repair Permissions after, and especially before, every installation is a waste of time which accomplishes nothing, and is thus bad advice.

Owning DiskWarrior is definitely a good idea, but running it regularly isn't. It's a tool to use when you have a problem, but running it when nothing's wrong isn't terribly productive.

Fwiw, alternatives to uTorrent are Transmission and Vuze.
