For anyone trying to make sense of the video, the camera is in an elevator. Maid is exiting. Elevator walls appear to be brushed stainless, making tons of reflections.

If the cam driver was actually paying attention, yes he could have avoided the accident. He seems to have just stayed at the same speed, despite conditions. Not paying attention, not alcohol or speed, is the most common cause of most auto accidents.

What the SUV did is so unexpected and insane, I’m sure the cam driver spent a good amount of useable reaction time thinking “they can’t really be doing that”.

Incoming SUV on left, and another car on the right. The only option would be emergency braking. We don't know if there was a car behind though.

In car crash videos, a car often swerves to avoid an idiot. Only to smash into an innocent's car. The guilty driver might even run away, without a scratch.

If there was a vehicle behind him, I'd rather maintain speed. If you cannot avoid a crash, at least include the guilty party.

Letting go of the gas would be a good first step in my opinion. Gives you back full traction, and you'll slow even without the brakes.

He's over-correcting. The faster you're going, the smaller the wheel corrections you can make.

This looks like an old VW Jetta. AFAIK, these models did not have advanced stability control systems.
I wonder if current day electronics would have help the car not getting out of control.

This is good advice, but I can see my instincts pushing away from it because I just cut-off that black car.

In my mind, it’s still right behind me until I check my mirror, and I assume after the first swerve I’m fixated forward.

That crash is strange. If the rear wheels are completely losing grip then yes the rear of the car can drift out, but, a) it looks to be fine road conditions, b) that's front wheel drive, and c) the rear isn't drifting out, is it? I suppose that if he's driving very fast he could have lost control and is trying to overcorrect? But he isn't driving significantly faster than everyone else - he is in the fast lane and trying to overtake on the wrong side when the car with the cam moves to the slow lanes to let him past, which is what triggers it, but it's not like he's sniffing the sound barrier. Either a very inexperienced driver who is just turning the steering wheel way too much, or something on the car broke down completely at just the wrong moment.

Throttle-lift snap oversteer is a thing. When you're on the gas, the weight has transferred to the rear. When you suddenly lift off the gas, weight transfers to the front and the rear gets light. If the car is turning, when the rear end gets light and the front end gains a ton of grip, the rear might try and come around on you.

It's highly dependent on tires, suspension, chassis, road conditions, and more. But abruptly getting off the gas isn't guaranteed to help things.

Is that a Camaro that just sort of "shrugged off" being a stunt ramp for the idiot? That says a lot about the Camaro.

I am typically very much against motorcyclists lane-splitting, because it's usually done just to get ahead; it is typically a sort of a cheat. Not in this case. It is an active safety technique to avoid what the Camaro driver might have done.

I'd love to hear "the rest of the story," if there is one.

There was a WHOLE lot of water on that road, but it’s really easy to not grasp that while you’re riding. And maybe the water collecting on the road was from heavier rain uphill, because it looks like the downhill side of the road had freshly washed out soil collecting on it.

Either way, that was a successful wipe out for both rider and passenger. Not many of those when rain and speed are involved.

I think, from the number of different tram drivers we’ve seen NOT flinching, that they are actually trained to not screw up by flinching and slamming on the brakes. Something like “When the idiot drives into your path, you may feel a strong bump. Just call the emergency services number when you have a free hand, and report which part of your vehicle they hit...”
