In keeping with the fact that today -- October 21, 2015 -- is the day travelled to as "the future" in the movie Back to the Future Part II, Apple has done its bit by silently updating Siri to respond with quips related to the film trilogy when users tell it "Happy Back to the Future Day." The phrases vary, but include bits like "well, they were right about the 'antique computer' thing" and "I'm looking forward to Jaws 19 ... I'm not sure it will beat Jaws 18, 'Robo-Jaws' though."

The company has a long history of such updates to note specific occasions, often involving Apple events. Built into Siri are some responses to lines from the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey, where characters would interact with the ship's computer by voice. Around the US and elsewhere, cinemas are promoting showings of the three BTTF movies. The meme for the celebration has of course been popular on Facebook, although fake photos showing other dates not actually referenced in the film have been circulating there for years.

In the movie, 2015 is portrayed as being very advanced in some areas, such as flying cars, and anachronistic in others, such as the use of payphones. While the film did accurately predict smart wearables, virtual-reality helmets, fingerprint readers, drones, and voice-controlled TVs, some of its other predictions have been made to be created because of their role in the film, such as flying hoverboards (which now exist in various, less-satisfying forms) and a limited-edition run of Pepsi Perfect.

Then you probably don't like "May the 4th be with you," either..?

climacs: look at the bright side -- unlike TLAP day (arr, me favourite shore leave!), BTTF is a one-time thing.
