I work at a school, and we're going through these Apple mini-DVI to VGA adapters like candy. They're used on a regular basis by teacher who plug their laptops into their projectors. I've seen reviews about how shoddy the quality is on these adapters (2 stars on Apple's store). Has anyone used PTC or StarTech's brand of adapter?
Looks better-made with the solid mold on the VGA end. The mini-DVI looks like it's manufactured by just one company, so I'm hoping that's not he faulty end.

They've got them from monoprice for $8.25 (or less if you order several at a time). Then even if they do break, you'll be able to replace them for pretty cheap. They look sturdier too.

The cable seems to come loose from the VGA end. If you wiggle the cable on that end the video loses/regains red, blue, or green -- like having a loose vga cable with only some of the pins making contact. Seems to be the #1 complain on the Apple store reviews.

Wow, awesome price. And they actually use USPS, so shipping is only $2 for 5 oz. cable instead of $7 from most places.
