I've been looking into upgrading my iBook (see signature) by adding a Superdrive and a larger hard drive. While shopping around online, I came across a company called "MCE Technologies" who are selling an 8x Dual-Layered Superdrive for the iBook for only $129 plus free shipping. This price almost sounds too low to be authentic... In comparison, the 4x Superdrive at iFixit.com runs $249. Are these guys authentic? Will I actually get a product and, if so, will it actually work?

Any ramblings are entirely my own, and do not represent those of my employers, coworkers, friends, or species

I've bought from them several times. Once was a FW drive case and the other was a SuperDrive upgrade for a Ti. Both were good experiences.

They've been around for a bit and have a good reputation, AFAIK.

I think you are safe.

MCE is more than respectable. They have been PowerBook centric for over 10 years. I am a long time customer and have now added RadTech to my list of all time favorite Mac Accessory Dealers. Anyone who is looking for PowerBook related stuff should check them both out.

I suspect the reason MCE's price is so low is because they aren't out to make huge sums of money on it. The drive they put in they probably pay (at most) $60 for. The rest of it goes towards their time installing it (probably half an hour - $20), shipping (another $20) and $29 profit

The guys charging $249 probably have similar costs but much higher profits.

Changing the drive on an ibook isn't quick or easy, but realistically, a DVD-RW drive for them as a part can be purchased on ebay for under US$100.

Man, things have changed. I used to consider MCE vastly overpriced. They used to sell superdrives for about $400 or more. I bought a faster one at the time for less than half the price, but $129 seems very fair.
