Planning a computer upgrade, and so I checked RAM cost.

I couldn't find any RAM for 27" iMacs at all at crucial.

If you use their "finder" you only get options for 24" iMacs.

Took a look at OWC, but they seem to be more expensive than crucial.

And memoryupgrade.com doesn't look good to my eye. Seems to be no-brand memory, but I could be wrong.

The memory Finder probably hasn't been updated for the new models yet. They take DDR3 1066mhz ram, sometimes called pc3-8500 ram, up to 4GB modules. It's important to remember that they take SO-DIMMS, ie laptop ram. Crucial has 1GB, 2Gb and 4GB modules available.

If the name on the sticker is important to you, then spend your heart out. With memory I don't care whose name is printed on the sticker. Memory specs are well defined and all memory has to meet them. There may be warranty differences between vendors, though.

Still, memoryupgrade.com took me to Crucial!

Vision issues? It's in the list with all the other iMacs.
Computer memory upgrades for Apple iMac 2.66GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5 (27-inch - DDR3) Late 2009 Desktop/PC from Crucial.com

I like Crucial but it's a bit spendy. Transcend is good at 4GB for $174 shipped.

It's not about the brand name. I just want to be sure to get quality RAM.

Thanks for the thumbs-up on memoryupgrade.com. (just found out the site that looked a bit strange was not memoryupgrade.com, but memoryupgrade.pro)

Thanks for the recommendation on Transcend.

I see this is laptop RAM. So, the 27" iMac has still a lot of parts from laptop computers... I thought this had changed when the 27" iMacs came out.

It got a desktop CPU. But...

The RAM is still notebook. The GPU is still underclocked. The optical is still flimsy. It's still an iMac.

I'll see what the next generation of Mac Pros has to offer.

Not really into the glossy iMac screens.

Dell has a very nice 27" IPS screen. In fact it's the same resolution Apple uses on the 27" iMac. It's matte too.

Dell U2711

Hopefully the next entry-level MP will be a bit more serious that the ludicrous offer Apple has now.

If this is the same screen like on the iMac, this is a good offer.

I have two reasons why I'd like to avoid buying another iMac:

1. The glossy screen (I know many like it, but it's not for me)

2. If you really want to put a lot of RAM into it it soon becomes almost as expensive as an entry level Mac Pro.

I really hope that we get a good Mac Pro line-up. No more lame duck cheesecake entry level units like the Quad (short for quadriplegic - paralyzed) .

I want to see a lot of space for RAM to put in. Especially with Photoshop CS5 being able to use a lot of RAM (my iMac has a lot of trouble with the big files from my new 5D II, I even had two crashes now).

There's another good display option, by the way.

I heard good things about the NEC 25.5" and 30" displays.

Nice. But it looks like the code is for $15 off, not 15%.

I put two in my cart and applied the discount. That's why I thought it was $15. Darn! I thought I'd get two for about $110 each.
