Sorry, MIDI to MP3 is fine.....but unless monophonic, not likely....maybe use the search function...

Funny title, to me, in it's impossibility being IN title.

Search will explain all that...good luck!

Do it all the time.
That sounds like MIDI -> mp3.

I am currently unaware of any way to convert an mp3 into a MIDI. If my understanding is accurate, it would require separating out all of the instruments, and then one by one calculating every note, and generating a MIDI based on that and perhaps user-selected software instruments.

But do not take my word for it; I am a novice at best when it comes to digitial audio, so I could very well be entirely mistaken.

There is no known way to actually convert an mp3 file into a MIDI, because mp3 has no semantics: it's just raw sound data. MIDI, on the other hand, stores an algorithm: what instruments to play at what times. It doesn't have any sound data of its own, but instead relies on an instrument set provided by the player.

Going from an algorithm to a waveform (MIDI to MP3) is easy: you just run the algorithm and record the waveform it puts out. Going the other way, however, isn't possible with current technology. If you could pick out and recognize every instrument in the waveform, keeping differences in pitch and duration in mind, then it would be possible, but sound-recognition technology is just not at that level yet.

You could make a new MIDI file which approximates whatever the MP3 is playing, but you would need some sure way of determining exactly what the MP3 plays (sheet music would be helpful here). You would also be limited to the instruments provided by QuickTime or whatever other player you intended to use, and it probably would not sound the same in other players which provided different instruments. This would not be an automatic process, either; you would have to place every note yourself.

Is there a lack of communication in this thread? Mp3 to MIDI. Not MIDI to mp3.

Sure there are converters, but they do a crappy job. The phone people used to do this with ringtones a lot. Musicians sometimes do this to shorten time for transcribing. I believe it works on the same principle that those MIDI guitar controllers work.

I don't know of any Mac software that does this, but I know there's a lot of Windows programs. Here's an example that I found with a quick search.

Garageband, logic, any app that has a software sampler will allow you to take a midi file and bounce that out as a wav, mp3, whatever. You need to reselect instruments that match the original ones in the midi, and in fact, today's software instruments sound very good.

As I said, I'd be happy to demonstrate with a midi file of your choosing.
Yes, we all know this. However, both the thread title and the first post (as well as Millennium's reply) EXPLICITLY mentioned the OPPOSITE.

doesnt sound like it got very good reviews... and at any rate, it doesnt convert "non ringtone formats into ringtone formats." So no mp3 -> MIDI.

My brother actually was able to manually convert music into MIDI. (well, an equivalent to MIDI) Perfect pitch helps. While he may have been born with it, there are some people who sell CDs that allegedly teach you perfect pitch. Not sure if they work or not, never tried them. Sounds too good to be true. But whatever...
