I'm using Firefox. What's everyone else using? Any particular reason why?

You need to amend your poll. I doubt many people use Mozilla or Netscape, however, many will be using Camino (like me), that is based off Mozilla.

Also you need to add the very popular Omniweb and Shiira (both use the same/similar engine to Safari). Some people might even be using the Firefox derivative, Flock.

It's a pity it is not possible to have a sub-poll that lets you choose the primary reason why, e.g. speed, features, extensions, OS tie-ins.

So if I could vote, it would go to Camino, because:
  • Speed (as good as, or better than Safari).
  • Works nicely with Gmail (Safari is rubbish for this, Firefox is good but feels clunky).
  • OS tie-ins (not as many as Safari, but it does have services and a native interface).
  • Interface (it's unified, lets you have custom icons etc).
  • It's a worthy goal to unite gecko and the Mac OS properly.

I'm not sure on how to edit the poll. Monkeybrain, that's for the info. I threw this up to get an idea of what browers are out there for Mac and which are good.

No, it doesn't.

Is there a reason why Camino is missing from the options? And Netscape is included even though they don't have a Mac browser any more?!

I didn't know they didn't make Netscape for macs. I also didn't know that Camino exsisted. I'd change the poll, but I don't think I can.

You also need to add OmniWeb.

Internet Explorer and Netscape for Mac haven't been updated for years.

http://www.caminobrowser.org/

Camino is a very nice (and I believe rather popular) Mac browser. You should definitely have a look at it.

Also noteworthy is OmniWeb: http://www.omnigroup.com/applications/omniweb/

Rather than sampling a few tens of people, try the Mac OS X Hints poll page and view the ~ 6 monthly "browser wars" there. E.g. this one was last week and took over 8500 votes.

From whenever they started (some time back in 2000) up 'til last week on that particular page. The browser war poll I linked to was conducted last week and its the 7th one in an ongoing series. You can tell roughly when each poll was posted by the date of the first comment, fwiw.

Camino nightly by krmathis.

Optimized for PowerPC 7450, using GCC 4.0.1 and 10.4u SDK.
Requires Mac OS 10.4 or later.

A beautiful thing! Much faster than Camino 1.0.

As JKT says just above, it's basically a nightly version of Safari with the most up-to-date code. Not every build is the most stable, so if you have trouble with the first build you download, try the next day's.

Yeah, I run the PPC 7450 release, but I don't feel it much faster… maybe it is due to my crappy DSL line

Are there available any comparison between the 'standard' release and the PPC 7450 version?, or maybe some good info about how the PPC 7450 version improves the browsing speed.

Thanks for such a great work

Firefox is very useful. It's not a "native" Mac browser, but it does provide all the necessary functionality (often better than Safari does, at least for me) and as it's cross-platform, I can step seamlessly from our iBook to one of the school's Gateway PCs running Firefox. Much goodness here.

I wonder if these either/or polls reflect the reality of most users. I mostly use Camino since it reached 1.0, for the reasons well enumerated by MonkeyBrain. It's so much faster than the current Safari and seems to open pages that causes Safari to hang even after I empty cache, discard favicons etc. And it just looks better!
But I still use Safari some, too, because I like its RSS reader -- I open Safari and see all my web feeds without having to use Vienna or another newsreader. When Camino gets RSS and a single command for emailing a web page (like Safari does), I'll probably use it almost entirely. I bet more than a few of us are using more than one browser for similar reasons.

I use OmniWeb most of the time, Safari at time too. I know some folks think it's crazy to pay for a web browser these days, but...
I love the thumbnail tabs and workspaces. I love Omnigroup as a company, they have excellent support and products, and will support them in all their endeavors. I have licenses to all their products.
But I do keep an eye on Camino and FireFox, and certainly fire them up to check compatibility when working on web site designs.

I use Safari and Shiira on my iBook and Power Mac. I used to use Opera on my PC laptop and desktop. At work, I use Firefox...

I've been trying to use Firefox on my Macs, but I always seem to default to Safari... *shrug*

I use Mozilla.
Have my mail archives in Netscape format since 1995 and Netscape 2 I guess. I switched to Mozilla, when Netscape had trouble making version 6 perform well.

I like the ability to switch between browser and mail application with a click in the status bar. Thats the one but important feature thats missing in Firefox/Thunderbird. The other missing feature is that mozilla works fine and there is no reason to switch to another app .

I'm in a testing period. I've tested Firefox for some weeks, and it simply rocks.
Safari crashes too often, but it has a handy RSS reader which the two gecko-baseds don't have.

I'm testing camino now and it also seems to kick ass.

You might be surprised. Some features do require changes to the Safari app shell (for example, 10.4 webcores in the 10.3 shell wouldn't have RSS). There's also a list of known incompatibilities between the released safari and the webkit nightlies (iirc autofill is borken, for example).

Nah, no nitpicking here. Webcore updates affect the rendering only... basically CSS, DOM, HTML stuff. So no new "features".

Boring nightlies, unless you're a big time html hacker, etc.

True enough, I guess, though "Inspect Element" is a new feature.

There isn't any specific lack in Safari that I am dying to have filled with a feature, though, and core improvements in rendering have me keeping somewhat up-to-date.

I use Mozilla FireFox, but ,ironically, I use one of the early Safari/OS X themes with a cute set of icons.
I think it's much more stable/reliable and more web-friendly than Safari.
With my mods, it definitely looks, feels and acts very Mac-like. Plus, unlike Safari, it's extensible/modifiable.
Plus, like most "other" browsers, I can update Firefox anytime without having to purchase a new OS X version to do so.
Tired of Apple having certain core app updated versions always linked to a new OS X release.
What's with Mac people using Mozilla Camino, anyhow.
I thought that Camino is an older Mozilla browser?
Does Mozillla still update Camino?
What' s the pluses/minuses of using Camino over Firefox?
