I posted this on the Apple Discussions board and recieved a lot of favorable feedback from it. It might help you too:

I did some extensive troubleshooting of iSync on my own last night and this seemed to solve ALOT of problems, might work for you too.

1. If Possible, erase all data on your Palm/iPod (just make sure the data is backed up in Address Book and iCal first).

2. Go to your home directory, then to the Library Folder, then to the Application Support Folder and then throw the "SyncService" folder in the trash.

3. Go to your root directory and then navigate to your Library and then to Application Support and then throw the "SyncService" folder in the trash.

4. Open iCal and Address Book and make sure all of your information is perfect and the way you want it sync'd.

4a. If you are trying to sync with a Palm: Open HotSync Manager in your Palm Folder (should be in Applications). When it opens go to the HotSync Menu and go to "Conduit Settings...". When that opens double click on the following conduits:

-Address Book
-DateBook
-ToDo List
-Memo Pad (Optional)

And set them to "Do Nothing" and then press the "Make Default" Button and then press Ok. For the iSync Conduit, double click on it and choose your options but make sure "Sync Contacts" and "Sync Calendars" are selected.

5. Make sure your Palm and/or iPod are plugged into their respective cables.

6. Start a HotSync from your Palm, the Palm should initiate the sync, then it will open iSync for you and initiate the iSync Conduit. At this point you won't see your iPod in iSync.

6a. After the Sync is done, Go to the File Menu and select "Add Device..." and double click on your iPod. Initiate a second sync from your Palm and this time both your iPod and Palm Pilot will sync. From this point on your will be able to initiate a hotsync from your Palm and all of your devices will be sync'd if you so choose.

I hope these instructions helped. As always back up your data before trying this (export iCal files and vCard from Address Book) as to not loose any data. Happy Syncing.

Thanks, iDriveX, this was helpful. I haven't removed the SyncServices yet, but have it in reserve if more problems.

BTW, another b/u option is just to command-D duplicate the following folders:

~/Library/Calendars
~/Library/Mail
~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook

I just used command-D to create the dupe in the same directory, but, of course, one can do it as preferred.

True, I just figured that it would be easier for people that didn't want to mess with moving files back and forth that you could export and import if there was an issue. A less than experienced user might have problems with duplicating the libraries, moving them elsewhere, trashing the originals if they became corrupted and then moving the dup's back in. But yes either way will work.

Yes, good point.

Incidentally, iSync seems pretty cool. I had given away my Palm to a friend, but he never used it and now I've "borrowed" it back. the combination of iSync, Address Book, and iCal may bring me back to using the Palm or something similar, as that way I can have some interoperability between my Powerbook and my Dell at work.

I went the other way and deleted everything in Address Book since my Palm is where I trust the data and is already backed up. Everything works fine now.

anyone else notice that they are not getting the second address fields (work, on my system) sync'd over to the Palm?

Or that apptmts are not syncing over from the Palm Datebook to iCal?

I'm using a Palm IIIe, with non-upgradable OS 3.0, so that may be the problem...

thanks!

The read-me included with iSync on the disk image includes all known probably (which includes what you described, I think).

How did it come to this? Goodbye PowerPC. | sensory output

I synced between two Macs over .Mac, and the same issue arises. I am not getting any cards with two addresses, only one per card. The original Address book on my TiBook has more than one address on a lot of cards, some home, some work and some other.

On my iPod, there are no addresses at all!

Is this an alpha release?

It worked out of the box for me (just iPod & .mac on two machines - I don't have a palm & my nokia 6310 isn't yet supported.)

The only problem I had that is easily solved was this:

I had most of my addresses already in my iPod (from the old address book 2 iPod appleScript.)

When I sync'ed with iSync i found my iPod had many duplications - most addresses had two versions.

I looked inside my iPod (I have it mount as a fireWire volume) in the "contacts" directory - there were two files:

iSync.vcf & addresses.vcf

I deleted the second and everything was fixed!

Well, a public apology is due: I apologize for not reading the damn read me before posting! :-(

However, that only covers the lack of 2d address fields. The problem with the Palm-created date events not syncing is not fully addressed.

I have the "unfiled" calendar created in iCal, but it is empty...

EDIT:
2 resyncs rectified the unfiled calendar. the first one erased the new appts off of the Palm (!!!), but when I rewrote them they wrote to the iCal. Go figure. This sort of crap used to happen occasionally regardless, long before iSync, so this is not necessarily a fault or bug or even feature (;-) of the iApps. But it is why I gave up on using my Palm...

iSync works pretty well, except for this:

- I need to reset my Visor after each sync (which results in the same installs being performed every sync)
- Sync doesn't update Palm Desktop, although Visor is updated

iSync isn't designed to update Palm Desktop. It's a conduit between your Palm (Visor) and Apple's Address Book and iCal. I'm afraid you'll have to choose: do you want to use Address Book/iCal or Palm Desktop?

The other issue with your Visor needing to be reset between Syncs seems to be a more serious issue. Is the HotSync Manager trying to install a system update to your Visor? The system is on the ROM with a Visor and cannot therefore be updated. If this is the case, you will need to delete (or move) the "Palm OS Updates" folder within the "Palm" folder in "Applications".

Hope this helps.

Thanks, you nailed it! Seems like the new Palm Desktop Version had these updates within.
How can I get iSync out of my Visor Hotsync, so that I can sync it normally again? Would I be able to get it back easily?

To stop using iSync (and therefore Address Book and iCal) and revert to using Palm Desktop:

Open HotSync Manager.
Open the Conduit Settings window.
Select "iSync" and open "Conduit Settings".
Deselect "Synchronise Contacts" and "Synchronise Calendars"
Close iSync Conduit Settings window.
Open Address Book Conduit Settings and make sure that the default setting is "Synchronise the files".
Repeat for Date Book and To Do List.
Close HotSync Manager.
You may wish to set these conduits to "Handheld overwrites Macintosh" for the first Sync; but as a precaution make a backup copy of "~/Documents/Palm".

You can also disable the iSync conduit by moving it to from "/Library/Application Support/Palm HotSync/Conduits" to "/Library/Application Support/Palm HotSync/Disabled Conduits".

To start using iSync again, reverse the process.

Probably not an iSync problem, except that my addresses in the Palm Address Book and Address Book in OS X don't have a "standard" for certain fields. (Anyway to get OS X Address Book to add suffixes/prefixes to names?)
