MacBook Pro.
With the antiglare (matte) screen, not the glossy screen.

Ditto. And jam it full of RAM.

Graphic arts? Which ones exactly - depending on what you want, the MB might work just fine and be a lot cheaper. Of course, I agree, if you have the cash, MBP FTW.

Well, I suggested the MBP simply for the screen size. The MB's only offer a 13" screen. That's simply too small to do any serious graphic design. Heck, I work at home on a 23" HD Cinema Display, and I often run out of room with all the palettes in Illustrator or Photoshop.
I also think the MBPs more-powerful video card will help in terms of screen-redraw. Back when I was setting-up my home system, I actually thought about going the laptop route with the big Al Powerbook (over a G5). But, when I put the Powerbook through its paces, I found the screen-redraw far too sluggish.
Hopefully, this issue is different in the MBPs now.

And, as AD says...stuff the MBP full of ram. But not Apple ram. Get some aftermarket ram. Much more affordable (assuming it's easy to add in a MBP. I really don't know)

Thorzdad - I agree with everything you say. I just think that, if he is a student, the MB might be worth a try out.

Adding RAM to the MBP is easy. Apple has come a long way since Ti PowerBooks in this department.

Thorzdad is on the money -- 13" is way too small for design work.

Screen redraws on the MBP are a vast improvement over older Apple pro laptops.

Having been a poor student I understand this reasoning. That said the extra speed will pay for itself. I'd put out the cash for the MBP.

And, if he is a student, he might be able to swing an edu price on a MBP.
(Apple does still offer edu discounts, right?)
