I just bought an eMac and a few days later received a spam from Apple offering me a 12 m,onth free subscription to MacWorld magazine. I followed the link in the email and signed up for the offer. At the end of the sign up page, MacWorld asks you what Apple product you have just bought. Well...

... I think the picture speaks for itself.

I think they are telling us that they need better editors. You will not see a G5 in an iMac before a PowerBook.

You can never be to sure.

What I find most odd is that there is no option for the eMac I just bought.

If you really want to read anything into this, Apple will be phasing out the XServe G5 around the same time, replacing it with a G4 version.

They claimed it was for digital signature purposes.

Really? That seems incredibly unlikely to me. iMac G5 is an absolute no-brainer as far as I'm concerned. I'm expecting that to happen ASAP. I mean, how many more months can they simply watch iMac sales continually spin down the toilet?

Powerbook sales are still solid and I think there will still need to be some battery issues and heat issues before a G5 powerbook makes more sense than a G4 powerbook. I don't anticipate Apple rushing to sacrife mobility for limited power gains as long as sales are solid.

Then I predict that the iMac announcement will still proceed the PowerBook announcement in Steve's keynote.

Agreed. I expect to see either both at the same time, or an iMac G5 before an PowerBook G5... but by only by a few months.

The problem with an iMac G5 is not heat or anything. It can be done with the latest versions of the CPU. But the i range is a consumer range and it would not be good marketing for the i range to have a G5 model before the whole Power range is completely covered.

Obvious stuff.

Sez who? The iMac is G4 is selling poorly. It needs a G5 (or at least a much faster G4) yesterday. All that needs to be done first (or at the same time) is to increase the G5 Power Mac speeds.

eg. iMac G5 1.4-1.6 and Power Mac G5 2.0-2.4.

I'd say that the iMac is likely to get a G5 not because Apple wants it to have one, but because it is soon going to need one.

The Motorola 7455 has about topped out at the 1.4GHz mark, with very few/almost-none holding stable at 1.5GHz. And it looks like the 7457 is not quite everything Motorola has promised it to be... Meaning that the iMac has what is pretty much the best G4 in it already. The only place to go that is up is to the G5.

I still see them brand new in Mac-stupid stores (the stores still charge the last known retail price of the iMac G3). It's possible they finally sold one.

There should be a law against that kind of stupidity

Don't be too sure about that. The G4 cube was intro'd in Aug 2000 and the PB in Jan '01. The iMac now fills a slot closer to the cube (prosumer/upscale consumer). Now, I agree wholeheartedly that we'll see a G5 powerbook before a G5 eMac.

Nah, there's already a tax on it.

Thanks for your sunny disposition.

Was it done here? If not where was it done?

And why are you sorry?

Are you sorry you have to tell me?

Are you sorry you didn't share where it was posted originally?

And they have been making mistakes talking about iMac G5s for a period of time long enough to make it "old news"?

If they could make a 20" iMac G5 for around $1,800, I would buy it today. But $2,000 for a 20" iMac G4 is too steep, in my opinion.

For that much money, I'd be better off buying a 20" Apple Cinema Display and putting a daughtercard in my existing G4 tower, I think.
