An Apple Store employee has been arrested and charged for grand larceny, among other crimes, after allegedly re-encoding credit and debit cards and using them to acquire close to $1 million in Apple gift cards. According to an investigation, Ruben Profit of Queens, New York, is said to have bought vast quantities of the gift cards in the store he worked at between August and October, which he then sold on to third parties.

Profit started working for Apple in December 2013, transferring to the Queens Center Mall when it opened in July, reports NBC New York. Using his position in the store, Profit is claimed by authorities to have used re-encoded Visa and American Express gift cards, debit cards, and pre-paid credit cards to make purchases totaling $997,000. When arrested, Profit was allegedly possessing 51 gift cards that had been altered to include credit card details, as well as seven Apple gift cards worth $2,000 each.

Prosecutors claim Profit told police he sold the gift cards on to third party, though he only charged $200 for each $2,000 gift card. The investigation itself was prompted by chargebacks received by Apple in October, immediately indicating there was fraudulent activity occurring and giving a way for investigators to trace how the purchases took place.

Arraigned on Friday and held on a $20,000 bail, Profit faces a maximum prison term of 15 years if convicted, according to the report.

the only better name for a fraudster and con artist is the Rev. Creflo Dollar, the sleazy god botherer who demanded $65M so he could buy a luxurious private jet.

So he bought $1M in gift cards, sold them at 10% of face value, and got $100K out of it. Bail was set at $25K.

Either he can post bail easily, or they know he spent most of it already.
