- VPN connections to Cisco servers when using NAT
- compatibility with third party applications and devices
- previous standalone security updates

Oh ok, I must have missed the memo that said the "higher post count" meant you were allowed to tell people what to say.
My apologies...

10.4.4 gets cracked and a few hours later this is released. Coincidence?

Yes; Apple have better things to do than worry about somebody almost getting OS X to install on generic PCs.

hey, but no ppc fixes would also pretty-much mean no new problems;
what more could one want from an update...?

(and yes...."installing now"....)

but then i wouldn't have the "latest, greatest"...

(as a mac tech, i install everything right away, so i can encourage (or discourage) clients to do the same)

and hence,

+1

So, I updated my 700Mhz eMac, and now it won't boot.

I closed all applications before applying the 10.4.5 update, and I used the combo installer out of superstition. I get the grey apple on the screen, but not the swirling progress meter below it. I also can't use cmd-V to boot in verbose mode. Good times!!! Any suggestions?

Heh. If you had posted 5 minutes ago, I wouldn't have installed it on my iBook like I just did, considering I'm stuck in a hotel room at the moment. Luckily for me, it's working fine.

Have you tried a reboot?

Dragging a widget out of the widget bar while the desktop picture is changing (automatically, for example) no longer stops the animation on an Intel-based Mac.

FINALLY!! I'VE BEEN WAITING AGES FOR THIS!!!

Hmm... I got into open firmware, did "setenv boot-args -v" and then "mac-boot", still no verbosity. Just the grey apple, which doesn't tell me much.

If this fixes the bloody annoying iChat "yourownusername did not respond" issue when trying to start a video/audio conference then this will be far more than just "intel" fixes...

Yeah, wth is up with these undewhelming updates? e.g., AOL mail? Who THE FIZZNITCH uses AOL? If you raise your hand, please, just go away. Widget update, yeah. What. The. iPod-smoking.

How about getting Google services (gmail, google-chat (ugh)) et al.) to actually work in Safari? De-beachball Safari? Fer CRIMONY'S SAKE.

Man, I feel like a tool but I should post this:

I'm impatient, eMac is slow... for some reason after the update it took like literally 10 minutes to boot up. Boots OK now.

Here is what I noticed so far :

- They changed the font used to display Mac OS X during startup
- They changed font smoothing : it seems to be more blurry for me, or a least different
- I was asked to enter my password after reboot... had to go to System Preferences to re-enable auto login

it's usually a slow boot right after an update.
if it's fine now...all is well.

Downloaded Combo update. Repaired permissions, ran TTP and unplugged my Firewire HD. Ran Combo updater, rebooted, repaired permissions, deleted all but English files and rebooted again.

Everything operating up to specs as far as I can tell at this point. Boot times seems a little long.

First, I'm having problems with software update- it's not always expanding packages properly (recently), but then when I finally downloaded it from elsewhere, the dock didn't seem to be working properly, and neither is expose- the app switching is somewhat quirky. Any thoughts?

They changed the font used to display Mac OS X during startup, eh? I don't see a bit of difference.

Well, it broke my internet for a few minutes. It forced a nvram-reset, pram reset and disk permission fix to get it back up. Besides that, all is well.

So, my Power Mac Quad G5 is fscked. And even fsck won't fix it.

After restarting, I attempted to log in. Seemed fine. No shaking-its-head-no login box. Blue screen. All righty...

But the blue screen never went away.

It is, indeed, the blue screen of death! Ahhhh!

So, I boot into safe mode, like someone on the news article comments suggested (hold down shift before chime).

After logging in under my usual username and password, I get blue screen then black screen with:

Darwin/BSD (whatever.local) (console)
login:

I'm thinking... Okey. So I can go back to command-line world, right? What'd I buy a Mac for, anyway?

So, like the guy in the comments on the news article said Apple Support suggested, I old-school style move StartupItems...

su
mv /Library/StartupItems /Library/StartupItemsOld

(Oddly, su mv didn't work... I got a weird "cannot executive binary file". Su'ing and then mv'ing did okey, though.)

Typing a few exit commands and restarting from the login window... Tried logging in again... And, once again, a brief glimpse of cli/Darwin black screen, and now I'm back to the blue screen of death.

Ugg.

I thought I bought a Mac to not have to deal with blue screens of death and poor software quality assurance testing and the like.

Help.

Please.

I'm desperate. Really. It's Valentine's Day. And I'm all alone. Even my G5 doesn't love me anymore!

justen

Actually, I think this update may have made me a very happy person. Snce I got back to school, the internet was absolutely killing me. It was dropping out, downloads couldnt finish, it was horrible. Yet aftetr I installed this update, everything has been better than usual. Granted, its one night of testing, but If ths update fixed my problem I'll kiss Steve Jobs.

The same thing happened to me on my Powerbook. I just restarted it and it logged in fine.
