I am considering buying a new MBP17, Late 2011 (the current model) and want to run Snow Leopard. Will it work? I know it would on the previous model (released in April 2011), but what about these new ones with a slightly updated GPU?

I have a disk with 10.6.8 that I could just clone to the MBP's hard drive.

I need to be able to run XCode 3 and build for 10.5 targets.

It worked on the last MacBook Pro? Generally it won't even let you attempt to install an older OS than what the machine shipped with.

I had Xcode 3.2.6 running on 10.7.2 just yesterday.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

Really? It is not officially supported and I'd be wary of releasing code built that way.

We can trade. I have an early 2011 17" MBP SSD matte display running 10.6.8, and running Aperture the stronger new GPU would be nice.

I know it would on the previous model (released in April 2011).

The early 2011 Sandy Bridge MBPs shipped in February 2011 with 10.6.x. I have 10.7 (developer) but have chosen not to install it on that box.

I may have installed Xcode before Lion, but it ran.
