It's pretty awful, looks like they're trying to appeal to the "average consumer".
("Pretty awful": Semi-pretty in an over-used 'Web 2.0' kind of way but with no meaning what-so-ever.)

But how can it be any worse than the one they have now? Yeah I am not thrilled about it. But the one they are using now is just atrocious.

So many logos these days are designed for screen only. That atrocity will print terrible, even on decent paper. When I first started in the business I would have been handed my ass on a plate by my Creative Director had I handed in anything similar.

A nice step backwards. Unless you're going for a weird post modern VISTA look. In which case, nice logo!

And here and now is when icons become sort of Vista gadgets… not that all OS X widgets are perfect, but you know, it was MS who really brought gadgets to everyday computers !!
But… I am still waiting for a nice XPress icon, got it Quark?

Horrid. Also, I'm kind of a fan of the current icons. No confusion, real business-like when they're sitting in the dock. Also with Adam's icons and others out there, there's plenty of ways to spruce them up if you see fit.
This new thing is AWFUL, and seriously how does this lame thing even make it as far as OUR eyes?

Yeah.. something "Gel" like that doesn't transfer very well on all mediums. Not that their other logos "followed the rules" either.

Backwards from the single color block icons with "PS" on it?

No. Not even close. Even before OS X came out with widgets there was 3rd party applications out for OS X that did it similarly.
MS copied the look and feel of these "applications" and called them "gadgets"
It's their typical M.O.
Take ideas or concepts that are already in use. Make their spin version of it. (Usually with a similar name as a spinoff) and act as if you invented it.
I remember when OS X first showed off "Aqua". MS a month or so later replied to it with a GUI called "Luna" with Aqua like behavior (But in a fake dodgy way) that we now know as XPs Fisher Price GUI. And then of course they acted as if they invented that "smooth plastic shiny" look. XP was actually supposed to have a lot of features Vista has (some didn't even make it to Vista) But MS had to have an OS to reply to OS X. And that was what XP was. Vista was actually a lot later than MS claims. Just because you rename a product, doesn't mean that the time you spent on it suddenly starts there.
They are just now catching up with Quartz with Vista. And of course, acting as if they invented it. Even though Quartz has been out since before 2000.
They did it with text to speech too. That one really had me laughing.

So sorry Kevin, it was being sarcastic… I had to make it clear…
I guess everyone around here does know about how brilliant MS is when it comes to bring original stuff…

I think angelmb was kidding. And the Photoshop logo is blue, not black.

Doh! I apologize. I don't know you so well. And we've had people making similar claims in here before. So you never know.
Glad to see you were sarcastic.

I don’t mind the current logos, either—they’re simple and they get the message through loud and clear, which is what I deem most important in a logo—but “no confusion” simply isn’t right.
There are three big inconsistencies in the current logos that bother the hell out of me:
- Why is every logo simple and text-based—except one (the Flash video thingy), which is an image, but put in the same box as the letters in the other ones? Makes no sense.
- Why can’t they just stick to either uppercase or lowercase in the second letter of the icons? Why must “Fl” for Flash be uppercase F, lowercase l (L); while “ID” for InDesign is uppercase F, uppercase D? Sure, InDesign is two words joined together and they’re both capitalised when written out—but there’s no reason they couldn’t just have gone with all uppercase, then, and done “FL”, as well.
- Why can’t they find a unified way of abbreviating the program names? Photo + Shop => PS. Makes sense. Two words, first letter of each word. Same for DreamWeaver (DW), FireWorks (FW), InDesign (ID), and so on.
Flash, though? Not much doing. Use the first two letters, FL. Okay, works fine.
Illustrator, then? Do the same and get IL? Nooo, we’ll make that Ai for—I assume—Adobe Illustrator. And we’ll even make the i lowercase, even though it’s actually the letter that illustrates (pun!) the name of the program itself! WTF?

I completely agree with all your points, it bothered the hell out of me, so I had to change them, they also didn't stack nicely to other apps in the dock.
I'm guessing the naming followed through from previous versions of each bit of software and the viewpoints of many individuals, but they should've been uniform.
This new logo seems to be another "we could, err, umm, ok, let's do that" kind of deal.

Well, it bugs me, but not to the degree where I want to change them altogether. I still like the concept behind them, and I actually rather like the way they look in the dock. I have them next to Wen Lin, System Preferences, and the Finder, all of which also have large, square icons; so they don’t look out of place here.

Woo. It'll fit just perfect with my copy of Mac OS X 1.0 and Microsoft Office v.X.

I no longer agree with all your points, heh. But each to their own... at least there was some sort of concept as you say. But the new one fits in how exactly?

The concept? For them to be simple, square blocks with letters and unique colours for each app. Easy to remember, logical, and not (in themselves) distracting (though combining them with many of the more ‘rounded’ and ‘Applesque’ icons in a dock would make them distracting).
Edit: Never mind—completely misread your last sentence. I don’t see how this new thing fits in with anything, either. Except perhaps a disease-ridden rhesus monkey’s representation (drawn with its feet) of the MS Office:mac 2004 icon set...

This new logo is not for the app icon. The app icon will still be the blue PS. The new logo is branding for the Photoshop family.

I like the "Elements" concept as well. It took me a while to get used to it, after the initial shock of Photoshop beta. I mean I thought it was truly a "beta" icon back then. But together with the rest of the suite it makes sense.
I had a square replacement icon set already installed (AlBook) so it didn't stick out that much except for the colours.
And of course I like Adam's replacement icons as well.
That new blue thing though... ewwww.
