Seems to have improved things... but within 3 days of installing the 1.1 firmware, I just got another Random Shutdown. So, no, the firmware does NOT fix the problem. But maybe it'll prevent it from happening again once you get the hardware fixed.

i really didnt want to bump this thread.. but here goes.

Today whn my mom was using the MB [just using iChat and safari] it shutdown by itself and restarted by itself.. and once it restarted 10 secs later the same thing happened.. i got pissed and immediately called apple care since all of our apples work fine but this one. I call explain everything that happened to the guy [trevor]

1. shutdown twice w/in <30 secs
2. while restarting fans go full
3. whn fans go full they start making really loud creaky sounds

we did a couple things over the phone [dont ask me .. i dont know] anyway im on the phone again [w/ June@aplcare] because once i hung up w/ him it happened again and the comp froze after the restart, making me hold the button down

So far mine has been fine but I haven't really pushed it yet. I DID buy Applecare for it so IF there is a next time I'll make them send me a box for repairs. I normally don't get maintenance agreements but since there is a chance I might need it with these it may be worth it.

Is this still an issue with the new C2D MacBooks?

My curiosity got the best of me, and at the risk of voiding my warranty, I took off the top case so I could see the heatsink on my Week 33 2.0 Macbook. I have the new heatsink (according to old and new on Flickr - Photo Sharing! ) along with the sponge. I haven't experienced any random shutdowns and suspected that I may have the "fixed" heatsink. Just thought I'd share my findings...

If so Apple has a HUGE problem. That would call into question of the whole design of the MacBook. So far no C2D RSSing. I won't say conclusively that CD RSSing is completely gone till 2007. I heard that the heat sink went bad after 2 1/2 months and I got my MacBook in the July and it started RSSing in mid-Sept. when I got it replaced.

Lets hope that this doesn't come up....

I appreciate your reply, I really do, but saying RSSing is the most confusing thing ever. At first I was thinking, "So ... error reports are sent as RSS feeds now?". I don't even know what you mean by it. I'm assuming random shutdown something ...

I agree, however. I'd feel a little ashamed to be an Apple fan if that problem has taken so long to resolve.

RSS = Random Shutdown Syndrome. Don't know who made it up but RSD would have been much better (Random ShutDowns)

I haven't been here for awhile. My MB is from week 20. It's been powering off a few times. Also it's been refusing to charge or run off the AC adapter sometimes. I replaced the adapter and it still does it.

I have applecare. Do they have these bugs worked out if I take it into the apple store? It's a good hour drive for me. Or is it best to send to Apple?

Let Apple handle it through the DHL box to Tennesee route; ours was fine afterward including a delay for a hinge part and my upset that they replaced the hard drive without explanantion (no prior problems).

If you send it in, use the ApplenDisk Utility to make a backup disk image, just in case.

I called Apple and they are sending a box. But they told me the firmware update will fix the random shutdown because it fixes the heat sensor. I haven't updated yet. I thought it was actual hardware that needed to be replaced?

Since my MB is from week 20 is there anything else I can get them to "fix" before it happens?

How do you do the disk backup?

How do you do the disk backup?
Check your trackpad operation and clicker for smooth and positive clicking.
Check your display hinge for creaking or binding on opening or closing.

Make a backup disk image by opening disk utility ( Finder->Utilities->Disk Utility->New Image->Save As)

As I said, my disk drive was replaced without reason.

Technicians are humans too Most likely they damaged your disc drive while repairing something else. If they were replacing your trackpad then they would have really been replacing the entire top casing that holds the trackpad. Any number of things can, and do, go wrong. One of the technicians next to me was pulling a binder off a shelf and ended up dropping a 5lb disc binder on my video iPod. It wouldn't surprise me that, while your top casing was removed, they dropped a screw driver on your disc drive. I've seen it happen.

so after all that i posted above.. I got of the phone w/ the project specialist [June transfered me over to him; adam] and after a while of explaining he said i could either repair or get replacement, to which i asked bro wht to do and he said replace since our MB has been bugged w/ problems since the beginning and even after repairs.

^i actually typed that up a week before thnksgiving.. but didn't post as bro said post after the replacement unit comes.. and it was supposed to come today. a new blackbook c2d. the ups or fed ex guy rang the bell.. my mom got it.. and the guy asked should i help bring it in? i was like wtf.. thats unusually nice of him.. cause the box the mb came in the first time was small.. she was like yea please, he said np and brought it in saying its pretti heavy. i walked out to the hall and saw the box.. it was massive.. i was like oh no.. please don't tell me... opened it a while later and i knew it. it was a freggin iMac! i don't believe this! and the address is correct.. so don't tell me to check the shipping label. invoice paper has my name on it as well. i just hope they didn't charge me for this! man im pissed... and i believe that i have every right to be.

sorry, i just needed to type it all out. im on the phone w/ aplecare for the 5th time today [first 4 times whn i was on hold i was hung up upon?]. I'll post wht the outcome for this is :-/

I am getting sudden freezing, and freezing after restarting. I bought my stock Macbook on ebay with a warranty. Should I go to the apple store and see if they can repair it?

My girlfriend's C2D macbook sometimes restarts when you open it up after it being asleep.
She say's its happened to her a few times and I finally saw it happen in person last night. The thing was running along fine and she closed it because we went out and when we came back she opened it up and the startup screen came on as if the OS was loading again.

Make sure the sleep light is pulsing before you physically move the MacBook. If you move it before it writes the current state to the hard drive then it can do what you just described.

This issue has gone on too long without Apple resolving it. I have gone through four macbooks, and reinstalled Mac OSX completely on this machine. This is extremelyt frustrating and must be taken care of. It happens too frequently and I have just about had it with this machine. I spent well over $1,400 on this and I am not very happy with the purchase. I am going to call Apple once I get home and complain.

It does happen when you are running off. battery that is probably why it is an issue with the battery. They will most likely be recalled soon.

I work an IT dept where we manage 100+ Macbooks. Had this issue on some machines until we discovered this.

Have a look here to see if there are any reports: Macbook Random Shutdown I haven't heard anything on the other news sites, so I think if there are faulty core 2s, it is not as widespread as the core 1s. Most people's problems were solved by the firmware update too.

Friends,

My macbook (Week32 - 2Ghz white book with memory upgraded to 2GB) has been shutting down lately. It happens very ramdomly. At first it never used to wake up from sleep and I was forced to reboot it. Then it started shutting down while I was working on it. I thought it was due to battery issues and worked while it was connected to the power source. It worked fine for a few hours and the next morning started acting up again. But then I connected it to the power source and after the battery got charged 100% started it again and have been on it for the last 30 minutes (the battery levels have come down to 84%) and its been fine so far.

Will it happen when it goes into the energy save mode or sleep mode? got to see.

By the by I ran the firmware upgrade a week ago and it did not help either.

Now my question is when I take this to Apple care do I need to pull out the 2GB memory I installed in it and put back the stock 512 MB memory that it came with in order to utilize the warranty service. That would be a pain. But then again if they chose to blame it on the third party memory it would be a bummer (of course un less until that is the issue).

did any one of you do the above i.e. restore the memory to its ship configuration before availing the support?

Thanks.

Never thought I will do anything similar, write a letter of despair out to everybody and/ or/ not anybody, (should I not write the following word, but I must) OUT THERE.. Not with Apple's product, at least, I thought not... not because they don't go bad, but for their known problem solving routines..
I'm a bit of a religious man, one might realize..
Some ten years ago I have made myself happy with a G3 Powerbook, which I still own and, yes, from time to time- use.. Now stop that.. It runs Photoshop seven just fine, and writing in good old Nissus under the "real" classic environment is just something I really need.. Warned you I am a bit of a religious fanatic..
You just could not visualize the joy which hit me when I saw it on the Apple's website for the first time (accidentally- I had no clue from anywhere that it is coming, thou I have predicted it following the black iPod, and yes- prayed a bit for it) a BLACK laptop by Apple!
I was "wise" enough not to jump and buy it until the Core2 version, I need all the CPU power I can get (use a lot of modeling/ rendering software), but when it did...
I didn't really care that the machine is on the lower edge of performance acceptability, it WAS the heir to my good but (just too) old G3PB.. And it made me happy, again almost a decade after, just as much.. Sure there were others in between, but nothing can match a white apple on a black surface..
It was a harmony and the harmony for about 3 months...
Then, out of nowhere, without any warning- RSS!! but I didn't know that was it's name, or that "it" had a name, neither that it was a common thing..
I just recently (this very night) found out that (it doesn't get much more pathetic than this, does it?) I AM NOT ALONE..
A rush of relieve, just to be replaced by an even worse painful contraction when I found out that: THERE IS NO SOLUTION (???)
Firmware update, but not for v2, unnecessary logicboard transplanting that might or might not change the situation, and take 2 weeks..
The heat issues attracted most of my attention so now I'm testing the smcFanControl app, running the fans about 3600rpm, and T 'round 57 Celsius (under 60), but it just IS NOT a solution.. Neither is the civil law-suit, not for Europeans at least..
I don't want a replacement, my money back or justice done.. Just want my MBlack2 to work not better, but work.
If anybody has anything to suggest, please, you're more than welcome..
I just can not believe still that such a huge and mass-recognized problem has not been properly addressed and/ or intercepted by Apple or a capable third party..
My faith is strong, but I am in grieve..
God bless you all out there!

It looks like a huge problem. I ran the test that stresses the CPU, as outlined here: http://racr.free.fr/Site/MacBooks%20...0shutoffs.html , and mine continued to run. Fingers crossed my week 25 is ok. I have had some concerns lately, the num lock/caps keys resetting their settings. Also, am I crazy, or should the power light glow when the macbook is on? I'm sure mine used to, but now it doesn't, although works fine when sleeping.
not because this whole macbook problem is obviously just to big not to have a decent solution, but the freakiest thing happened to me when clicking on the apple's forum link (and I have tried it a couple of times)..
I'd like to emphasize that while doing it, was clean and sober, empirically repeating the process 4 or 5 times just to make myself sure:
While Firefox was loading the page the temperature jumped from below 60C to 77C in no time (matter of seconds- not minutes) and the right indicator of my CPU monitor just went full (100%)..
As the temperature and fan speed rose I always switched off the tab in 10 seconds or so..
I am a big skeptic towards any conspiracy theories, and if were reading this very thing myself would probably laugh (if that)..
Somebody, please do the same thing, and tell me that I am simply nuts..
thanX

Mine does it too...it seems to be a pretty big webpage and lads rather slowly...slows down other tabs too.

Here's a kicker...Safari does the same thing, but jacks up BOTH cores on my C2D to about 75-80%. Apparently it's a huge page since it's still loading after five minutes!

I have a Black C2D, bought 2 or 3 days after they were released, and it's recently started doing the shut down after I put it to sleep. Pretty disappointing.

Wow. I went to that same Apple discussion link and my fan shot up to 6192 RPM, CPU A temp went to 77 degrees C, and Safari CPU usage was listed at 99%. I've never seen numbers like that. That was the first time I've ever actually been able to hear the fan in my MacBook without straining to hear it. I left the page open for about two minutes, closed it, and the fan immediately slowed down and the temp dropped down to 53 degrees C and CPU usage went from 99% to 7.1%. It's a message board, not high definition video being encoded in multiple windows. What logic is there for such a massive strain on the system running a page with no video or motion at all?

Its a 4.5MB html file, with nested tables up the wazoo. Not exactly the sort of file most web developers have in mind while coding. That said, it's a great torture test for devs to play around with (Gecko doesn't handle it well either).

My Macbook seems to have started shutting off completely when it gets to lower battery amounts. Yesterday I had 32 minutes left and it just switched off, not shut down just off. Today I had 58 minutes and it did the same. But the thing is I went to the Apple store a couple days ago about a different problem and the Genius said the computer was hardware sound. Should I take it back and get it checked for this problem and it might find something? My warranty runs out in 5 days you see so I'm feeling kinda nervous.

Okay. Nothing new in here in a while and nothing in the past 11 pages seems to help.

Mine started doing this a bit ago (month or so). I didn't think too much of it as we have some power outages around here, but, since the clocks weren't blinking and it seemed to be happening overnight, I thought something with the Mac.

Doing the troubleshooting 101, I did find the setting in power management was to put the computer to sleep even when running off wall power. Changed that to never, but, it's still happening now and again - not every day.

So the question is, what now? I checked the system log and there isn't anything in there. In fact, it appears the system log is brand new from the last restart. Any way to change this so that it isn't reset?

Running 2GHz MacBook w/ 2GB RAM (Apple installed) and OSX 10.4.11. I'm wondering if there wasn't a system update that may be causing it (remember the USB problems with 10.4.8 I think it was?).

I did a battery recondition just to make sure at the beginning of January as well, but, am reluctant to do the SMC reset based on warning I've read.

Don't really want to take it to the Apple store as it would probably be there for a few days before they could duplicate the error and then who knows how long before they figure out how to fix it (if they can).

BTW, I'm running iStat widget so I can check the power and temps if anyone has an idea what they should be.

Ideas? Thoughts? Suggestions? Thanks!!!!
