I'm upgrading from a G-4 with OS-X to a Mac Pro. I understand you can use FireWire to transfer files from the old to the new machine. However, the instructions imply you need FireWire 2.3.3 installed in the host computer to make the transfer. I downloaded it but it won't open in OS-X. Seems it's for OS-9 or earlier. Is there any later software needed for the "Target Disk Mode" to work or is it all inherent in OS-X?

That's for pretty old Macs. Your G4 and Mac Pro should be more than fine.
Boot up your G5. Plug your G4 into the G5 using the FireWire cable. Then, while holding down the T Key, turn on your G4. It should then mount the HDD onto the G5 desktop.
To get the files you want, you might have to right-click on the G4 HDD and select the option to Ignore File Permissions on the volume.
That should do it.

also, to show you that the target disk mode is working, (and if the G4 is connected to a monitor), in the G4's monitor will show the firewire symbol as a screensaver.
To *exit* from the target disk mode, on the macpro, eject the disc(s) of the G4, and on the G4, press the power button for one second or so.
I've done that n times, delicious!

Hi; I have a G4 and Mac laptop. The G4 has the original 20 GB drive plus an additional 250 GB drive. When using the firewire mac to mac transfer (ie, booting the G4 while holding the 'T' key) it seems that on the laptop only the 20 GB harddrive is available. Is there any way to access the other drive? Thanks.

That's not expected behavior; you should see both drives. You could try disconnecting the 20G and see if the 250G shows up. Perhaps the jumpers on one of the drives is set incorrectly?

Is the 250GB firewire or USB? What type of Mac is the G4? What's the Mac laptop you're connecting to?

That's normal behavior. Only the first drive will show up through TDM.
From How to use FireWire target disk mode
Tip: FireWire Target Disk Mode works on internal ATA drives only. Target Disk Mode only connects to the master ATA drive on the Ultra ATA bus. It will not connect to Slave ATA, ATAPI or SCSI drives.
