So out of boredom I tried FTPing to my server through the Finder (Go > Connect to Server) and it worked! I was able to upload and download, and in column mode there were live previews. The last time I tried this (in the lower range of the 10.3 releases) it would either not work at all or, if a connection was made, I could only download.

Did I completely miss out on something? Sorry if it's old news.

News to me. Last I checked, Finder FTP is still read-only. Are you sure you connected using FTP? It sounds like you accidentally accessed some other protocol on the same server.

Definitely FTP (I'm on broadband connection in Wisconsin, servers are in California afaik).

Go > Connect to Server in the Finder and ftp:// in Safari (same as the former) get me in. It's slow as hell and not entirely worth it at the moment, but it looks promising.

I just tried FTPing into my own account on my own computer, and it is still read-only as of 10.3.7. Are you sailing the seven seas?

Haha, yep I'm sure. Although I'm in 10.3.8 so maybe that's it?

The way I'm doing it is the same as connecting to another computer on the same network:

Connect to server (I put in mydomain.com)
Asks for username and password, with Registered User already selected and no way to log in as a guest.
Asks what directory to load (Home Directory is default)
Connects, shows up in the Finder.
I was even able to save the pic to the server directly from Photoshop!

Hmmm..

12" PowerBook - X.3.8

When I log in to my account at the uni, it's read-only.

Is there any chance you can try and FTP into an account that's not on the same server/network as you?

If no one else can repeat it I may set up a dummy account to see if other people can FTP in.

Wow, if he can actually write to ftp, I'd love to have his version of mount_ftp.

If I made an ftp account on my server for you, could you try to upload something with the finder?

Nope, doesn't work for me, either. I'm using 10.3.8 and I tried it with two different servers.

10.3.8 here, read only.

edit: tried it with both Linux and OS X 10.3.8 FTP servers; no joy. Read-only in all cases that I tried.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

If you're not putting in ftp:// in the connect to server line, you're getting AFP, not FTP, which is why it works. If you put in FTP, the authentication dialog will say FTP File System Authentication, and does not have options like Registered User. Once you log in, it does not ask what directory to load (again, only AFT does that)

So it sounds like you're doing AFP, not FTP, and that's why you can upload.

Do a get info on the volume and make sure the format is "FTP". That should settle it.

I guess it must be AFP. If I'm in Safari and I go ftp://chrislow.org, it auto connects off the keychain and chrislow.org shows up in the Finder and is read only. If I do Go > Connect to server and just put in chrislow.org, it loads "Home Directory" in the Finder and I have read and write privileges.

^^ ftp:// in Safari

^^ Go > Connect to Server in the Finder

So, why can't I connect to my server via afp? I talked to my admin guy and he has no Idea what AFP is

Yeah I don't know what AFP is either. What are the odds that the computer I'm connecting to is running OS X and that's why it's possible for me to do it?

It looks like Linux running an AFP server. Kind of unusual, but not impossible.

Because Finder's FTP is read-only. This has been pretty well borne out by this thread. Ozmodiar was logged in via AFP, not FTP, when he had write access.

So what exactly was going on?

What I mean is, did I have a unique experience or is this something all people can do all the time?

Okay, that's too bad. It could be nice if you actually could use it

Wonder if there are a good explanation...

And what are the odds that Tiger's Finder's FTP will be read/write?

You were connecting to a computer that runs an AppleShare server as well as an FTP server. If a company is running AppleShare, then yes, anybody can do it.

As for the two posts afterward, I think the search feature might be helpful for that. There was a thread on precisely those topics a month ago.
