Long story short, working on a colleagues comuter at her house came across a porn folder, thought nothing of it, except that maybe she was into kink! haha

Happened upon the folder again yesterday and all the pics were definitely underage.

What is my obligation regarding busting her? What would you do?

It doesn't help that she is a superior and I am in line next for her job.... Looks bad. I was thinking I should just forget it, or do something anonymous but I am not sure.

Yikes... well, because I'm in education, if I saw that on my bosses computer, I would definitely have a legal responsibility to report it. In your case... that's tough. Anonymous probably is what I would go for.

You're going to the police, not to the management at your job. Don't mention it to anyone at your job or anyone else you know - don't burden them with the knowledge of a crime and leave them in the same anguish you're in.

1) They're underage.
2) They're actually porn (the OP suggests that the folder was labelled "porn" or something).
3) They're not her nieces or nephews in innocent photos.

I have not told anyone at my work, fact is there is only 3 of us who are together in this building.
I am 100% sure they are lewd pictures and they are underage, there is several hundred of them.
I am going to the police when I can get out today and they will do whatever they do about it.

But like everyone else said, you better be sure they are underage before running to the police. Hopefully she doesn't say that you planted them when you were working on her computer so that she would get fired.

I have a friend who worked with the FBI (on a contract thing) unlocking/decrypting info on computers of suspected child porn owners.

He said he did lose his lunch a few times and ended up quitting the job.

Definitely a job for the authorities. Stop agonising over it, realize that you're going to do something about it and focus on that. Don't speak to anyone about it until you've spoken to the police/whoever, you don't want to start doubting yourself - you saw what you saw, you cannot ignore it or try and explain it away - that's not your job.

Be prepared to be asked a ton of questions, and you may have to go into a bit of detail which'll be tough for you, but it'll highlight the extent of the issue.

Good luck zerostar, by all means come back and update us, but if you do be very very careful what you say on here or anywhere else. You've been circumspect enough so far, that's good.

This is a difficult situation, to be sure. I can understand why you'd hesitate. These kinds of accusations are very serious things, and not the sort you want to be mistaken about.

One question: was what you found actual depictions -photos, vides, and that sort of thing- or drawings and stories? If you found any actual depictions, then you should contact the police immediately.

Drawings, stories, and such are more of a legal grey area, since you can't prove that any actual children were involved in the process of making the stuff. Of course, most people who have drawings and stories also have actual depictions, which are prima facie evidence that children were involved in their own creation, and so they end up being convicted anyway. But there have been a few people caught with only drawings and/or stories, and some of them have mounted a successful legal defense based on not having any actual depictions. Whether or not the legal situation should be changed is a matter of fierce debate, and it's not my intent to get into that here.

If you only found drawings and stories, then it's more of a judgment call on your part. Given that you didn't see the whole collection, I would contact the police regardless: they're in a better position to investigate further.

That's why the police should investigate. Among other things, they may be able to establish when the stuff got onto her machine. That could very well preclude any possibility that he planted the stuff.

She could claim that, but that wouldn't likely cause problems for him. There will be at most no more evidence that he planted it than that she downloaded it, so at worst nobody will be punished. Also, she probably has some on her home computer too (not too many people leave their child porn at work), whereas he doesn't.

So if these are just pictures of naked kids (not involved in sex acts) I guess it is not kiddie-porn. I didn't realize that before. So you can have hundreds of pictures of naked kids, so long as they are not involved in anything "obscene".

You have to report it. And if her office computer is searched and they find more underage porn, she won't be your superior for long. Plus, your company will probably even be thankful. She won't be, but you have a moral obligation to do something.

Something similar happened a few years ago when a former boss of mine found kiddie porn on a former co-worker's computer. (One of his `contacts' misspelled his e-mail address and the server admin found it. His desk and computers were searched and they found more. The police was called two hours later and he lost his job on the spot.) The sad part is that I rather liked him.

Wild. A former colleague of mine was busted in Denver for being a major ecstasy cook/dealer and having an army-sized automatic weapons cache. We worked for the same company, but in different cities. I'd had drinks with the guy and he was well liked by everyone... Even promoted from front-line grunt to management. Needless to say, it came as a major shock.
