what's the macbook like with just the standard 512mb ram? just for basic stuff like internet etc

Yeah my brother's got a mac mini intel which is almost exactly the same specced as a Macbook and its pretty useless when you're running like iTunes and safari and mail at the same time. This is because OS X itself uses a good half of the stock 512mb. My brother's ordered 2x512mb sticks to go in it which will hopefully speed it up. I think you need at leasta 1GB really.
iBook G4 12.1" 1280MB 30GB(soon to be 100) 1.2Ghz. First Mac, had for 1.5 years, loving it.
