Typically when I boot up my machine I get my IP from the DHCP on startup.

How can I release and renew this IP without having to reboot?

Thanks,
Bryan Haggs

I know this is possible from the command-line; unfortunately, I don't remember exactly how. Check man dhcpcd for more info. man ifconfig may also shed some light on the subject.

There's a GUI way to do it, but it's more convoluted. Open up System Preferences. Go to Network, and change the settings so that it uses anything other than DHCP to access the network. Thensave and System Prefs. Then go right back into System Prefs, and set the system to use DHCP again. That should get you a new address.

This is yet another bug that is confirmed to have been fixed in the elusive X.1

Actually i've got a simple solution that works both in Classic and X.

If you put three space (hit the space bar three times) in your dhcp client ID, save the changed setting, the mac will release your current IP.

Sometimes you get a new IP as well, but if not go back into TCPIP or Network control panel and remove the three spaces from your DHCP Client ID, save and you should get a new IP in few seconds.
