The core of Mac OS X is named Darwin, which is based on the Mach microkernel and BSD Unix. The classic Mac OS was originally released in 1984 on an 8MHz processor with 128KBs of RAM. The Mac was originally much too weak to run any advanced OS like Unix, as were all personal computers of that era.
