You may have heard about the rather disastrous fires that has claimed whole towns and communities here in South Australia. The death toll is up to 181 at the moment, with an estimated final toll of over 300. Many of these fires and relighting of fires are suspected to be arson.

I was going to donate to Red Cross today anyway, but I got an idea to raise awareness through Twitter. For ever @reply I get today I'll raise $1 extra on top of the amount I was going to donate. For every new follower I'll pay $2. (Until 3pm today)

So please twit me at http://twitter.com/erikveland (#erikfund).

It will cost you nothing to reply of course, although if you could match with a donation of your own that would be even better

Thanks.

In fact, if you don't have twitter. I'll count every person replying to this thread as $1 as well

Good, because I have no earthly clue how to "twit" you, or whether or not I could live with myself in the morning.

+$1!

Another way you can donate, which I've just taken advantage of is to buy the 5-for-1 PDF tech book deal at SitePoint, where 100% of the profits go to the relief fund:

http://snipr.com/bpu24

Score another $34.50 for the fund

Thank you Doof, voodoo, Dork and Laminar for your support! In the end I donated $85 $96! A lot more than the $25 I had planned to donate originally!

Here's the breakdown: $6 Twitter, $4 Macnn, $34 Facebook / Friends, $6 (to top it up to $50) and an extra $35 $46 via the SitePoint tech book sale from myself!

To top it off I also sponsored my friend Brooke with $10 for the World's Greatest Shave this week in support of Leukaemia research. Whew!

* Australian $

I don't twitter, but I sent them a donation. It's a very good cause.

Personally I feel that people should donate money to the RSPCA instead.

I'd be inclined to say that you would have done better during American working hours but only an Admin could say what MacNNs peak hours are for sure.

You're just pissed because this is the one time a timely post on your part actually would have done some good.

Well, my point was to raise awareness, and even if I've put in my donation - that doesn't mean that you can't do like mattyb and insert_coin and donate some of your own:

http://www.redcross.org.au/vic/servi...ppeal-2009.htm

And RSPCA is a very good cause to donate to (or even better, go adopt a pet), but right now there's a lot of work that need to be done in rebuilding communities and getting people out of refuge-style tent cities. Not to mention that fires are still raging.

Good on you for donating blood Cipher. I'm going to see if I can donate more even if I did not too long ago.

I just gave redcross.org.au $100. I know it's not a lot compared to how much has been lost, but if everyone puts in it will all add up.

BTW it's not South Australia it's in Victoria, which is in the south of the country. Not nit pick, I just thought I would point it out.

I can't believe it's still burning! I live in Sydney and it's dominating the news every where here. Is there anything that is good going on else where in the world? It's just so depressing to see constently.

Yes, I meant south Australia as in "south in the country", but the state is of course Victoria. I've only lived here 4.5 years now, but I should have caught the mixup

I donated the full amount in my girlfriend's name and gave that as a Valentine's Gift. She was very pleased

What if this turns into a Hot Babes thread? Will you have the cash for that?
