Enterprise-oriented cloud storage firm Box has acquired Folders, an iOS app used to manage files from cloud storage services. The purchase, for an undisclosed amount, will see the technology behind the app rolled into Box's own iOS app, with Folders developer Martin Destagnol being drafted in to help with its integration.

Folders provides users a simplified way to access Box, Google Drive, and Dropbox, and offers the ability to open a variety of files on iOS, including PDFs, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Google Docs. Music streaming, access to photos and videos, and a code viewer with syntax highlighting and line numbers are also included.

While Box does have its own iOS app, vice president of engineering Sam Schillace claims Folders will be an integral part to the next version of the app. "When we saw Folders we saw a beautiful experience and a set of design patterns that we had to bring to Box's users," wrote Schillace on the company blog, promising that Box for iOS "will become cleaner, faster and more beautiful" throughout this year.

Earlier this month, TechCrunch notes Box pocked up Crocodoc, a HTML5-based service for displaying PDFs and Office files in a browser. Both Folders and Crocodoc are "consumer-grade" according to Schillace, due to their "usability, simplicity, speed, and performance," something which he hopes will be a "big win for users and a massive opportunity for Box."
