Spotify reportedly considering adding restrictions to free service

Spotify may be considering a move that will limit what free users will be able to listen to, if a rumor is correct. It is claimed Spotify may change its service to a "gated access" model, which will only allow certain releases to be available to paid subscribers without restriction, with free users facing the prospect of either being denied access to the song altogether, or limited in terms of time or the number of plays of specific tracks.
Sources of Digital Music News claim there are multiple possibilities for the premium-only or gated content, and they are still under discussion. It is suggested one option could allow free users to have access to a few songs from a high-profile album, but not all tracks, while subscribers can listen to the entire album.
The plan is apparently an attempt to try and encourage more free users to switch over to the paid service. One source is reported as saying "They want the free users to feel like they're missing something, not just forced to listen to ads." If Spotify does go ahead with changing its free model, report sources claim it will apparently do so sometime in "early 2016."
The alleged increased push to convert free users to paid is apparently exacerbated by ongoing music licensing negotiations with major labels. It is said that the biggest labels, including Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group, and Universal Music Group, have still yet to renew the licenses with the service just two months before the October 1 deadline. As time marches on, the labels could use this as leverage to get Spotify to agree to the rumored changes, though CEO Daniel Ek is said to "hate" the idea of adding such restrictions to content.

This is dumb. The free users *are* paying by listening to the ads. If spotify wants more paid accounts, add features to the paid side. Don't subtract them from the "free" tier. That just gets people mad, and pushes more people to piracy.

They're in a bind. What services do you add to a music streaming service if free users already get the full service?

Live concerts. Interviews. Pre-releases. Better channel selection. Interaction with social media. Ability to interact somewhat with artists.
That's off the top of my head. Oh wait, Apple already is implementing these things.

Exactly.
Also, all of those things cost money that Spotify isn't making.
