GameSHOUT.com reports that Tom Cruise has banned the playing of video games in his home. In addition, publications that contain game-related material are not to be read. The ban primarily affects Tom's two adopted children, Isabella, 13, and Connor, 11.

wow how socially unpopular his kids will be.

I would find it hard to believe that he would be the only house hold that does this really.

They can/will always do what I always did when I was not allowed to do soemthing, was
go to my friends house and do it. Parents are sucka's

When I was younger, there were a few parents of friends I had who either
1) Banned all console
2) Banned all computer games
3) Banned both

Its not really that uncommon, or at least it wasn't. I don't see a problem with video games, at least not until they become a problem (Lemme tell ya... some people and their WoW addiction...)
yep.

my parents only allowed me to play an hour a day of video games, and this was after i did my homework. i could however play as much as i wanted durring the weekends. same goes for computer use, unless it was school related.

I heard the only two books he'll let his kids read are Battlefield Earth and I'm Okay, You're Okay.

My mom didn't mind me playing Nintendo when i was young but if games were as violent back then as they are now there is no way I would have been allowed to either.

I agree. It's not like playing video games is necessary for healthy development.
Read books, do crafts, play outside, do sports, get active in non-profit organizations etc. There are tons of possible activities for kids that don't involve a computer / game console.

Tom Cruise should stop working in entertainment industry and be a Monk!, what a hypocrite he is. Reminds me of the recent movie thanks for smoking (his fiancee played on the movie).

SO TRUE! Mario bopping the head of a Goomba is certainly not as violent as [insert violent video game name here] (i'm out of the video game loop for the most part, the only one i know about is Battlefield 2, because my guy is obsessed with it!)

Well, then again Link had a sword, that's pretty violent...

Ya but it is very animated looking. Games these days look very real.

Heck, I was allowed to have any transformer I wanted except for Megatron as he turned into a big gun. I also wasn't allowed to have G.I. Joes as they are war figurines. If Tom came up with that rule it would be all over the papers.

I think Tom Cruise is a bit eccentric, but there ain't anything wrong with keeping videogames out of his house.

Heck, Madonna has disconnected the TV service to her house and DVDs are the only form of electronic media that she allows her kids to use.

TV, Internet, and videogames are all okay in moderation, but that doesn't mean that they're essential. In fact, nearly all of us here at MacNN would be better off just ditching the games and forums and getting lives instead.

Weird. I couldn't get GI Joes either.... or toy guns. So I made my own. And I traded friends for GI Joes. Heh.

That's a good idea. That way they avoid being brainwashed by commercials. When I have kids, they'll be allowed to play video games. On either an Atari or REGULAR NINTENDO system. That way they'll be raised right. When they turn 8 or 9 I'll get them a super nintendo.

I think it was a right move on my moms part, I would do the same.

I always wanted to go to my friends house with GI Joes to play with them. I didn't like them much I just liked the idea that I wasn't allowed to have any myself yet was still playing with them.

It might have also effected me though as I have zero interest in guns in my adult years.

Light sabres and blasters are just as violent.

I think guns are cool, I'd like to own one, but only because I think they're fun to shoot and I'd like to have one accessible if the **** ever hit the fan, so to speak.

No not really. They are very fantasy based and have no connection to reality. It is easy to make the distinction between reality and fantasy.

Also you see next to no blood in star wars. People also don't get shredded by a hail of bullets.

Then why not play with GI Joes and play violent videogames? It is easy to make the distinction between reality and fantasy.

my father and I used to play space invaders on our intellivision... it was fun topping his high score.

but we didn't have any violent games, I only played a few hours after school (probably too much).

We're trying to limit the toys and tv shows our son watches, limiting violence, so games will probably be the same.
