New iPods need 10.4.8? Seriously?

What's up with that? All of the new iPods say that they need 10.4.8 in the system specs.
Even the shuffle.
What the hell? I've stuck with 10.3 all this time and it's really starting to get annoying. Nothing seems to work anymore and I sure as hell am not upgrading now with 10.5 so close.
I wonder if they really need 10.4. It seems really odd to me. Especially the shuffle. My brother has 2 month old shuffle and it works fine on my computer. What is so different about the new one? Did they just lock out the old OS to be jerks or what?
My wife wants a Nano, and it seems ridiculous that it won't work. A lot of people never upgrade their systems, seems like a dumb move. How many people are going to get home with their iPods to discover that they won't work?

iPod: Minimum System Requirements
Mac OS X 10.4.8 or later or Mac OS X 10.3.9, and iTunes 7.4 or later for the current line up.
Meanwhile, iTunes 7.4.1 requires Mac OS X 10.3.9 or later or Mac OS X 10.4.7 or later.

Why do we Mac users have to scroll down when they are our own iPods? I mean, Windows is at the top, whats wrong with that?

It’s simple:
Apple wants to sell! OS X 10.4!

Well, according to a guy here at my office, the Nano definitely does NOT work in 10.3.9.

I can now 100% confirm that the 3G Nano does not work with 10.3. It pops up a dialog box when you try to sync.
Seems a little silly. I bet a lot of people are going to get home with new iPods only to be surprised by this.

Seeing that 10.4 was released almost 2 1/2 years ago, I don't find it unreasonable at all that Apple is requiring it to support it's most recent iPod offerings. As gooser said, if you don't want to upgrade the OS, buy older peripherals.

Worst case scenario, Apple sees either an influx of returned iPods, or an uptick in pirated copies of 10.4.x in order to operate new iPod.

Or get Windows™. Apple isn’t that picky when it is about users of a different OS. They only expect their own customers to pay regularly for being up to date and being able to use their other hardware.

Leopard comes out in, what, a month? If you're waiting to upgrade, it's not that big of a deal.

You guys are right about the version of Mac OS X. In fact, Macs made after mid-2003 had USB 2.0 ports on them, a must for current line of iPod classic and nano.

I don't have a big problem with the touch, classic or Nanos not working with 10.3 (although it is a bit annoying) but if it is indeed true that the "new" shuffles do not work, then that is messed up.
That would be a case of them just hobbling them on purpose.

Interesting. I wonder what 10.3.9 has that 10.4.0-10.4.6 doesn't ....

Marketing: there are more Windows-using iPod owners then Mac-using iPod owners. Get used to it.

I dunno. I keep imagining the comments to a headline that reads "Zune2 requires Vista" ...

10.4.1 - 10.4.3 on the Intel side were developer only, and apps created on each version didn't port to higher versions due to changes Apple was making. 10.4.6 likely represents the version Apple finally stabilized the intel side of the universal binaries.
10.3.9 can understand universal binaries enough to run the PowerPC components inside them and likely didn't care about the intel specific changes.
