I'm starting up a number of machines to help with the 'dog training', but am not having any luck getting my test machine started. I followed the guidance on the team pages and all went as it said it should but in my client folder are none of the expected files, so I am unable to check my logfile to see if it is actually running.

The last lines of my terminal window were:

Decompressed FahCore_65.exe (644424 bytes) successfully
+ Core successfully engaged

Running TOP shows that FOHcore is running but where would the output be? Also can I close the terminal window that I used to start FOH?

Sorry if these are daft questions but I'm a bit puzzled when it comes to terminal windows

~/Library/Folding@home

do
Code:
tail -n 20 FAHlog.txt
to get the output. For whatever reason the Mac clients give no indication that they are actually runny.

I was puzzled by the same thing when I started up this time. Stanford has added another control to the CLI client: "-local" which causes it to put the work folder in the client folder, where it used to always be.

If you do not use the "-local" tag, the CLI will share the same folder as the GUI and Saver versions: (home folder)/Library/Folding@home/

If you have a single processor box, you can leave it there. Otherwise, shut Folding down. Move the contents of that folder into the Fold folder with the client, and remember to restart with the "-local" tag.

I chose to move the contents back for familiarity, and added a launch script much like dFold. The client was named "folding" and I created a script called "fold":
Code:
#!/bin/sh ./folding -local -verbosity 9
Launch the fold script, and the client is back to it's old behavior. Guess I need to update the CLI install page.

Some things do not change. You still have to check the workunit logfile to see the unit progress, regardless of where you put the work folder.

Cleared that up for me. I was just a bit concerned that I was not processing units correctly.

Thanks for the help.

Now to bring a few machines into the 'fold'

Welcome back DAlex. Glad to see so many of the gang willing to help out. This is not only going to be fun doing a little dog training, but is a really worthwhile project too.

A few quick tips for anyone who hasn't ran in a while.

Stay away from the Screensaver version if you can. Way too slow.

If using the GUI, make certain you run it hidden. That means using the "Hide Application" - "Command H" in the Folding@Home menu. Don't minimize to the task bar, as that just slows it down. Ran hidden, it is nearly as fast as the CLI, but provides a quick way to check progress by briefly displaying the app. Just remember to re-hide it.

For the CLI, do as reader50 mentioned above and use the -local switch. The CLI is required if you want to run multiple instances in a dual processor machine.

Thanks Shaktai. I've been away a while but should be bringing some more machines online over the next couple of days - so far just a G4 733 and a 17"/800 iMac.

One final Q - I have a machine in work running fold, logged in as DAlex, when I start my home machine and set up my identitiy as DAlex will it combine the two or will there be two DAlexs running around!?

Cheers

If your username is the same in both, the results will be combined. The only thing to look out for is your name with/without email extension:

dalex
[email protected]

Stanford will accept both, but will not combine them. Since the project stats do not show the email extension, both accounts will show in the stats as just "dalex".

Your username is shown when the client starts up. It is also contained in the client.cfg file. This file will be located in the client's folder if you use the -local switch, or it will be in (home folder)/Library/Folding@home/.

Note when running multiple clients on the same account, each client must have their own machine ID. Don't just copy the client.cfg across, make the other machines ask for your username the first time, and get assigned their own machine ID by the project server.

Welcome back to the front lines.

Another tip to add to Shaktai's. In the GUI version, If you want the hard disk to spin down (good if your computer is in your bedroom), dont merely hide it, simply dont view it. That is, when you launch the program dont view it, just let it be. Eventually the disk will spin down if nothing else is running. Why simply hiding it doesnt have the same effect is beyond me. Its kind of annoying, but its easy to check its progress in the logfile.
