For as long as I have used tabbed browsing I have been able to hit command T and a new tab would open with the cursor up in the search/URL bar. Today when I open new tabs, I have to click in the URL bar to type in the address. I looked through everything trying to figure out why that is....chrome still works that way....is there some setting for this that I'm missing?

Not sure, but Cmd-L will highlight the address/search bar, as a workaround.

In Safari Preferences - General - New Tabs Open With: needs to be set to "Empty Page".
