installed panther- 12 inch PB won't boot

17 inch has had 10.3 for a few weeks now (i'm a software developer) but i just put 10.3 on the 12 inch today (audio machine, and the 10.3 drivers weren't out yet)
well, the machine won't boot anymore. it gets through the progress bar and shows the desktop pictire, but the finder won't actually load. no icons, no menubar, just a spinning beachball
rebooted from the 10.3 install disk and repaired permissions (which i also did just *before* installing 10.3 ) and then verified the disk (no repairs needed) and it still won't boot up.
this is not fun

I had the same problem with my 15". It turned out to be the additional 512M RAM that I bought from OWC.
It ran fine with 10.2.8 but not with 10.3.
Removed RAM and machine runs and boots fine.

wasn't the ram
a clean install did not fix it, so i thought what the hell and tried a clean install *again*
that did it

It's odd that you mention RAM. I installed Panther on my 1 GHz Ti Friday night and noticed hardly any bump in speed. Perplexed I wiped the drive and tried again... still the same thing. I ran Disk Warrior, Cocktail, Panther Cache Cleaner, Disk Doctor you name it I tried it. No improvement.
About all that I could muster was a bump in my Xbench score from 85.5 to something like 86.2. What angered me wasn't the benchmark numbers it was the feel of the OS. Startup and shut down were noticeably faster but normal tasks didn't run any faster than before.
As a last resort I put the two stock 256 meg RAM chips back in (I had been running a gig of Centon PC 133 memory for the last week).
Rebooted and bingo!
The system felt noticeably faster, my Xbench score even jumped about 8 points, so far the maximum score I've got under Panther (with the stock disk drive) is 95.1, not bad considering the machine is now bone stock. This is inline with benchmark score I saw while I was running a Hitachi 7K60 and a gig of RAM under Jag.
Although I can't prove it I'm pretty sure Panther is less tolerant of RAM than Jag... that being said it's a hell of a lot faster now!

i wonder if panther will be more tolerant to apple ram chips now...
that would be an evil business move of apple.
