Need help resolving what would go best in the living room in our house (the living room being the room no one ever goes into). My wife feels that it should be some attractive, but really uncomfortable furniture. I feel it should be a pool table and a kegerator.

Why? My TV is big enough, and I don't watch that much. I'd much rather invite friends over to play pool than to sit around and watch a movie without talking.

Nine years. This whole thread is mostly for entertainment. The uncomfortable furniture is already in the living room. I will eventually replace it with a grand piano, but I'm not ready to pay to repair and move the piano yet.

Since by your own reckoning you don't go into the living room, it should matter of the furniture is uncomfortable. I also doubt that it is truly uncomfortable.

I voted for the furniture because a pool table and kegerator in the living room makes the place look like a dive or a bachelor's pad. Make it a home that you and your wife can enjoy. Save the pool table for another room like the cellar.

Formal furniture is such a waste of money, but then again so are rooms that are designed not to be used. When our house was built, we took out anything "formal"; no formal dining room, no formal living room.

I say use the room for something useful, like storage. Then, behind the tallest row of cardboard boxes, THAT'S where you hide the pool table! And I'd opt for a second fridge for bottled beer, over a keg box. That way everyone can enjoy the beer they choose.

Nine years. How many kids do you have? Set the room up as a hobby/playroom, if you don't already have such a space available. Otherwise, opt for a hobby that needs some space; saltwater aquariums or perhaps model railroading. For geek points, you could set up a gaming table for Dungeons & Dragons.

Or you could combine hobbies with the kegger... set up a home brewery As a bonus, that would also be quite uncomfortable to sit on.

Here's a suggestion:

Since you never use the room, take everything out of it. Furniture, colours, the lot. Then brick up the windows and doors. Keep pretending that the room doesn't exist. Sooner or later, you'll forget you ever had a living room.

Best thing I ever did. You will get much more enjoyment and "family time" out of a nice home theatre than a pool table and kegerator or uncomfortable furniture no one will use.

If the ONLY options are pretty but uncomfortable vs. pool table and kegerator, the pretty stuff wins. It's in YOUR best interest in the long run.

However, keekeeree is 100% right-and you can sell this to your wife as "it's pretty AND functional, see..."

There's a reason bars have pool tables and not uncomfortable living room furniture. When the urge strikes to play pool, go to a bar or billiards hall.

I actually like formal living rooms for family time during the holidays. The pictures always turn out better in those rooms because you have less "life" clutter. And it makes those moments a little bit more serious since your on the couch you can't put your feet on.

You get the pool table, and your wife gets a dance pole - counts as uncomfortable furniture

I think Pool tables are great. I actually know someone who had a pool table in his living room. Total Bachelor pad. He got married, his wife moved in, and the pool table moved.

Everyone likes a pool table, but a living room is not a good place for it. A living room is a place that people see, a place that people walk through. A game room, a den, basement, cellar, etc are all good places for a pool table. A living room is not.

On the other side, I think you should get some comfortable furniture in your living room, and start spending some time there.

My brother that is 12 years older than I am had one when I was 6 or so. It had a long red velvet cover on it that went to the bottom of the floor. I used to crawl under it and have two light brights going on as consoles pretending it was my spaceship. I had a "space gun" in the back too. I even had one of those fold out seat things that are made of cushion as a cockpit. My friends thought it was all cool, and one even wanted their parents to buy a pool table so he could have a spaceship too.

This was in the basement, so I could turn off all the lights any time of the day and pretend I was out in space. I think he Light Brite eventually made me interested in LEDs.

No that was just the ease of getting it when I was in 12th grade that started that.

When I was 17/18 back in 90/91 I could get LSD easier than alcohol. $70 for 100 hits. I'd sell enough to make back my money (you could sell a hit for $5 each) and then give out the rest to friends and massive parties. Having looked back, I wish I hadn't messed with the stuff. I wonder what kind of damage I did to myself. We'd even get the liquid and drop it in our eye. It would take no time.. But that was a different story/topic.. hey wanna go ride bikes?

Again, this poll was more of a joke than reality. Although, I'll probably end up with a pool table out back by the pool and a beer fridge in the outdoor kitchen.
