Two days ago a mother whale and her calf beached themselves in Hollywood, FL:
http://www.miamiherald.com/news/nati...y/1179853.html

I was on the beach, about 4 miles north the next day and saw this:

It was about 3 feet long, maybe more. What is it!?

I don't mind it being unrelated to the whale, I just kept calling it "whale tongue" before I even knew that two whales had beached themselves one day prior.

The whales were fairly well intact when they beached as I understand.

Could be left over chunks when they blew it up with dynamite.

I believe it is what's known as the junk. A whales junk is a collection of fatty tissue in the nose of the whale. In sperm whales the junk can weigh up to one third of the whales total weight.

So that's why they call it a dork, cuz junk was already taken.

Doesn't look like tongue. Tongue is basically muscle (and with some fat, etc.) and wouldn't likely break up like that. OTOH, liver tends to fall apart easily, which is why I'm betting on liver.

There's only one way to know for sure Ice, you're gonna have to taste it. Get pictures.

Just don't ask russian scientists (scoll down to #4 The Moscow Monster) to identify it, as they seem to get a bit snippy.

I've emailed the scientist who's doing the necropsy on the beached beaked whales, I have a feeling he'll say liver too. I just find it weird one of them may have "lost" it's liver. Could be another sea creature's liver, dunno.

The Marine Mammal Investigator who did the necropsy said it "looks like a shark liver. BIG SHARK!!"

And correction, Dr. Blair Mase, the good doctor is a she, not a he.
