Not exactly the same, but my s230 does not mount. It works fine with ImageCapture, and I use a $15 CF card reader if I want to mount the CF card.

PTP is designed precisely to prevent you from mounting the camera -- it's designed so you don't have to go through the hassle of making sure it's properly unmounted before disconnecting.
Your camera might have an option to switch from PTP to "Mass Storage" which would allow it to mount.
But I agree -- spend the $15-30 and get a card reader. Then you also won't drain your batteries when copying the photos over.

Canon does have software for mounting the camera on the desktop, but it's for OS 9 only.
In any case, once you use the FireWire CF card reader, you'll never want to go back to USB again.
