I have a PB 12" and my programs are quiting unexpectedly. I've called apple several times and they will not bring it in for repair because I want format it and reinstall. But I told them that when I first pruchased the machine applications would unexpectedly quit after 2 mins. of use.

Is anyone else having problems with applicaitons unexpectedly quiting.

Sorry but you are not making much sense. You called Apple and they want you to send the machine in? That would be most unusual for what looks like a relatively simple software issue. If the bahaviour persists I'd try two things:

Fix your permissions (post if you don't know how to do that)

Do a System re-install if that doesn't help.

I think that "want" may = 'won't'...

If that is the case, I'm not surprised Apple won't take it in for a hardware repair, as you haven't established it is not a software fault...

I would start from the install CD and run 'Disk Repair', I would also fix disk permissions.

If you know how, also run fsck.

See if this helps.

If it doesn't, run a reinstall of OS X with the 'archive data and accounts' option checked... you don't lose data and 9 times from 10 it cures any problems with thee instal.

In a Utopian society everything works out of the box, but sometimes it doesn't... you can't hold Apple or anyone else responsible for it.

Not following their advice to fix the problem is not going to make the situtation any better...

Peace,

Marc

Yeap..sorry i meant won't.

I did everything they asked except the format and reinstall.

How would I go by copying my home folder to CDs so that I can format and install Os X again.

There's no immediate need to format and reinstall, do as Marc has suggested first. (above)

To copy your home folder onto a CD simply insert a CD into your CD burner and drag the folder onto the CD icon. You will then be presented with the option to burn that CD.

Best of luck.

FCE would quit unexpectedly on my 17" but after trashing prefs a few times it seems to happen less frequently. Also I have OS 10.2.6 now so that could be helping. Putting the 17" to sleep while FCE is running seems to instigate the behavior. I feel sure it is software related, not hardware.

Just Choose an Acrhive install after Booting up from a Mac OSX/Ur 12" PB Install CD, and all your personal files (as long as there in your users folder) and I think "maybe" all your installed app's will be left untouched, only OSX will be replaced/reinstalled, also you can try deleting Prefs (if you can find them) for the app's that have been quitting on you, see if that helps.
P.S Have you added any hardware to your Mac (such as extra Ram etc?)

Well...this problem started happening the first day of my getting the pb 12" I didn't install any programs until about 2 days later and that was the Safari Browser...

I just thought that it was a little bug and an update would fix it..So then my optical drive went in and they replaced that and another part as well.

I called tech support and 4 occasions and they had me do:

Archive re-install
Did the fsck
Reset my firmware
Power reset
Verified permissions
Did some sort of thing were it checked the memory hard drive and etc. (i think a hardware test...were the screen turned many colors)
Maybe 2 or 3 more things that I can't remember the name off....

So after doing all of that and after speaking with 2 regular tech support guys and two specialist they say try a format and reinstall.

I'll try copying everything up on CDs but that's gonna take a long while transferring 14-gigs.

I added the Apple Extreme Card but that was about 3 weeks ago. No memory added.

What's FCE? I have 10.2.6 as well and all the other updates too. This problem would only occur in Safari but then spread to other programs like Word, MSN Messenger, etc.

tyrelle,

Back up your data, wipe your drive, and do a clean install of your software. After you do that, run Software Update in System Preferences and update everything showing. I hope you have high speed access to the web, then this will be a painless operation. This is the best way to get rid of software glitches.

If you don't want to do a clean install, then do an Archive and Install. Be sure to put a check in the box that will safe all your preferences and data.

You also mentioned you are having problems with Word. Be sure to go to www.mactopia.com and update Office X to version 10.1.2. Don't be too concerned about Safari quitting as it is a beta version, so it could just be the browser is not handling the sites you visit very well.
