I have been trying to view some European DVDs on my (U.S.) iMac. Some work without a problem (very local artists, may not have bothered encoding it??). But one I have been trying to watch with the pre-installed DVD Player prompts a window to come up, stating that I need to change the region code for the drive, and that I can do so only 4 more times.
I am not in dire need of watching this DVD on my iMac, as we are planning on getting a regioncode-free DVD player in the near future. It be nice, however, and so my question is if anyone knows of a way around that re-coding of the drive (or is it software driven, and I 'just' need a different player?).
Oh, since it isn't shown in my signature file - I run 'Panther'.
Thanks,
Martin

Great! Appreciate the help, Chuck.
It works well, except that the Apple DVD Player still comes on as soon as I insert the DVD, prompting me for the region code change. If I hit cancel it automatically ejects the DVD, so I have to keep the window open until I am done watching.
Where can I change the settings so my Mac doesn't use the Apple DVD player by default?
Thanks,
M

In System Preferences, there's a pane called CDs & DVDs where you can change that. (I think. I'm on Tiger, but I think it was there in Panther too.)

If you search the forums, you will find that VLC does not always work in situations like this - some DVD players, like the newer Matsushita found in most iMac G5s, refuse to supply the raw DVD data that VLC needs. If it works for you though - great.
