i was just thinking about how evey update more stuff on the screen pops out(buttons get gel filled, icons get shadows, ext) and then i was lookin at my desk top and thought apples next bueaty should be full "animated" icons (3D). like cover flow mixed with the dock and such. maybe im not getting across my idea but lifting the stale icons off the desktop would be a nice change.

Feel free to bend that idea or add some other things apple should do to spice up the experiance.

haha wow dont freak out y'all... it might have been the coffee talkin but its not that crazy. ummm. lets see, i didnt want it to look like a Pachinko i bet the tie to cover flowcluttered your mind(scrach it out of you head). i dont know how to explain it. but now that im more relaxed i can see why your scared. just look at your icons on your desktop....you can def see that they are flat and kinda plain.... so i was saying it would look cool if you made them pop out a little,(Trompe L'Oeil "ish")

You know a coverflow like effect would be really cool in iPhoto 7 or 8, like have them kinda slide in like they were on a roll, or pile in or something just some cool animation. That said the idea of icons poofing a bit when you scroll over them would be kinda cool. It'd be nice to have have like a bezel around the one you're selecting just because like I use background images that don't always give you a good idea of what the text is so it'd be nice if it could pop a bit.

The eye candy in Mac OS X has actually been getting more conservative with each version. Play with 10.1 and look at its buttons and menus.

I think animated icons would be eye candy for the purpose of eye candy. Luckily Apple's been shying away from that, and sticking to eye candy only when it will increase functionality (except for maybe the dock's genie effect). Doubt it will happen.

Quoted for the truth. All the controls in 10.0 looked like Sudafed gelcaps. Now, everything except the scroll bar as been flattened to look like the plastic buttons on the actual hardware. Likewise, the use of transparency has also gotten more sparing. Menus and inactive windows both used to be something like 50% transparent, while menus are now more like 10% transparent and windows aren't transparent at all.

There was an OS9 extension back in the day that provided animated icons. It was actually pretty cool assuming you picked icons that weren't indeed seizure inducing. Of course, it used about 30 megs of ram when I only had 64. It had to go.

Sorry, but I don't see the usefulness of this. The point of MacOS' design is to stay out of your way and not distract you from your actual work.

Notice how Apple uses bright colours in only the small interface elements, or when they want your attention. Also notice the large elements like menu bars and title bars are a dull grey. It's so the interface doesn't distract your from the actual content of your windows - you know, the stuff you are actually working on.

Notice how Windows uses bright Fisher-Price colours on the title bars, task bar, etc. and how tacky it looks.

This is part of the reason so many people say MacOS interface is more transparent than Windows and why it helps you be more productive - it isn't drawing your eyes away from your work all the time.

Apps are free to animate their icons if they don't want to. But most don't for a good reason.
