ok, now that all my apps have gone (or are about to go ) X...
any speculation as to when we'll see G4 iBooks?

(or...a compact-sized tiBook?????)

that's what i'm waiting for, a subnotebook-sized speed demon.

before i relinquish my beloved pismo...

hi fisherking,

i think the wait for a new subnotebook will likely be a long one, what with the iBooks so popular. snap up a G3/2400 when you find one. it'll run X now, with XPost Facto. haven't tried it yet, but i will

I can't see Apple producing a subnotebook in the foreseeable future, the market is already saturated, and the speed, of the PB and the iBook will not allow for it.

If PB went to 900Mhz-1Ghz then iBooks could go to 700Mhz-800Mhz and Sub 500Mhz-600Mhz, then it could be justified but at the moment, it doesn't seem likely.

How many people would actually buy a subnotebook?

Just my thoughts...

hmmm..
sometimes i find myself ogling the sony laptops at the computer store...
for me, a g4 iBook would do the trick, since apple will never make another "pro" subnotebook (which is what i really want)...
until then, i'll continue to worship my pismo...

Well actually sometimes I also find myself doing that, and if i was to get a subnotebook i would probably go with something like this

If Apple did make a subnotebook im sure it would be amazing but, i don't think there is enough market to warrant it...

Any way, you know any other good subnotebooks?

I think its pretty much of a stretch to call the iBook a sub-portable. The thing weighs 5 pounds! Personally, I would prefer a system that has seperate external drives, making the basic computer 3 lbs. or less. My friend just got a Dell Latitude 400 and the thing is pretty sweet. Super light and very sturdy. Built-in wireless means it can join an AirPort network right out of the box, and battery life is 3 1/2 hours on average without the DVD/CD-RW compo drive.

Apple should split the laptop division into 3 segments. They should make the next Powerbook as powerful and feature rich as possible, and not worry so much about making it slim or sleek. The should make the iBook as cheap as possible and add a subnotebook.

My sig is 1 pixel too big.

how much to pay? tough question...certainly depends on features, specs...and relative pricing of other 'books...

at this point, i'd settle for a G4 ibook (12" screen), and call it a day.
at least this is realistic (altho probably not until fall...)

As much as I want a subnotebook I have a feeling that Apple won't give us one. Or if they did they would pull a Cube on us and price the things out of reach of most people. As you say it depends entirely on the specs, but I think $1600 or so would be a good price range for something with a 10" screen (12" seems a little big for an ultralight) and a G4.
