Be careful with iTunes 5

I am always very careful with updates. I am glad I made a backup before trying this software.
I subscribe to 15 podcasts. I have just short of 1700 songs in my library, half from the iTunes store, and half from my own music library. in iTunes 4.9 this all worked very smoothly.
I upgraded, it rebuilt my library and all the links to my non iTunes Store songs were "lost", and my podcast list was wiped out. I am now back at 4.9....Appl eshould be ASHAMED of itself to release such a bug ridden piece of software.

Commodus,

where did I EVER say I represent anyone other than myself??

I was pointing out that I (me and only ME) had a problem with the update, nothing more....

and that Apple probably should have tested their software more.

Well, I'd say that your post suggested that no one ought to use it, as if they'd all have the same problems. Sharing your problems as food for thought is cool, but going "OMG AVOID IT IT SUXORZ" is what some people will complain about.

Barry obviously something is wrong with your computer or settings, this hasn't happened to most of everyone. Did you restart before it finished? let the installer completely finish? Are you almost out of disk space?

Telling people to avoid iTunes 5 because you had a bad experience isn't necessary the best idea. However please post additional details.

Where do you store your music files in relation to the itunes music directory? Did you backup your music?

I backed up again, closed all other apps, disconnected from the internet.

This time it found all my music, but did not keep my podcasts in the podcast directory. It put them in their own playlist. I copied th eplaylist back to the podcast window. When I reconnected to the internet, I had to resubscribe to all the podcasts.

I was upset when I thought I had lost all the non apple store music. Should have just made the post a Watch Out...not an Avoid... sorry

I just don't like the little "arrows" next to each song title, artist, album "pointing" to the STORE. And you can't disable it.

You can. Unless they changed that for iTunes 5. It is in the preferences somewhere.

My podcasts were also wiped out after updating. I don't think I'm missing any songs, just the podcasts. Kind of weird.

It's in the General preferences of iTunes.

Just uncheck "Show links to the Music Store".

You can switch the arrows to point to the album/artist in YOUR library - there's an easy hack at www.macosxhints.com

Backup has allowed that already.

No problems other than the interface of ugliTunes. I mean surely it's not as if they were short of interfaces they could have used, but instead we get something brand new. When will they make up their minds? Hopefully not at this point! And the new corners - are we heading back to square all around subtlely?

Can we say user error? Even if the purchased library references were somehow misplaced, just drag them back in! Problem solved.

I had problems too, the installer failed on me and I had to delete the itunes directory, deleting my library preference(play count and stuff) then once I rebooted and installed it(worked second time) I went add folder to library and added my music folder and it would only add 300 of the 1700+ songs in the folder, so I had to go add files and select all the files and import them, lost my playlists in this process(good thing I only had a couple).

I have 2 Macs and a Windows machine with iTunes. The Macs upgraded perfectly. Although, I have zero songs on my Mac mini. My Windows machine on the other hand was a huge debacle.

I tried installing it multiple times, but could never get the application to open. I ended up uninstalling iTunes, Quicktime and Bonjour. I then reinstalled and iTunes then worked fine. Unfortuantely, I had to re-add all my songs. The songs were already in the proper directory. So, it didn't take too long. I also lost my playlists and my iPods had to reassociate with iTunes and copy the tracks back over.
