I have had my 5th generation iPod (30GB), and a few weeks ago, I got this message that it needed to be restored.
Here's where it gets worse......
When I plug it into my MacBook Pro to restore it, an error (1418) comes up, and then the iPod has a checkmark show up on the screen, telling me it is okay to disconnect.
And that is how things have been for the past three weeks. Do I have to (100%) send it in, or can I try something else to restore it? I have also checked Apple's website on a cure.

Just solved the problem, believe it or not.
I simply went to "Macintosh HD/Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility", and reformatted the iPod as free space. You click on "Partition", and choose "Free Space".
I hope this tip helps, but it may not help everybody.
And for all I know, my iPod may have a dying hard drive.
