I'm a bit late in this discussion, but I would like to concur with the general sentiment that effgee has developed a nice improvement to the layout. However, I would like to toss out a couple of thoughts to further the discussion:

1. Logo area
I think of the logo area as an opportunity for branding and emotional content. In all directions so far, this area is played down to the extreme. I am normally a fan of minimalism, but it needs to either go further, or become a bit denser (e.g. news.news.com). It feels a bit too functional. The logo area looks more like a page description, rather than a branding statement. I also could see the logo becoming a tad more stylized, it currently relies too heavily on the Apple look.

2. Content area
This is really where you will create interest, again look at news.news.com. What they have done nicely is to introduce imagery to the articles and to vary the layout a bit. The layout reflect the content, too. Currently we two types of content layout within www.macnn.com, single article and collections. I would like to have stories visually separated: top stories, reviews, editorial, news snippets, etc. At the top of the page I expect to see the top stories with images and all else below. But, below the top stories I would like to see visual separation of the different kinds of articles.

3. Color palette/fonts
Here is where you could do a bit more to differentiate, without trying to be odd. It would be nice to see a bit more exploration of this.

4. Looking professional
It was a stated goal to elevate the design to a point where this publication is seen more credibly as a professional publication. I doubt that any reader would have any criticism of the content of macnn.com. The design work that you are doing will definitely improve the perception of the quality of the reporting, though. However, to really be seen as a premium news provider you will need two elements. Firstly, content that is generated through your own reporting and secondly layout/graphic elements that aren't produced purely via a CMS. The more manual work that goes into generating layout/graphic elements, the higer the perceived value of the publication. Again as reference, I think that the article graphics in news.news.com go a long way to making come off as top editorial.

cheers,

furrylogic

I just hope the new forum look doesn't bring even MORE bugs to NN.

One can barely navigate it without getting errors now.

Please keep it very clean. That's why this forum is usable. Too much crap in others. What forum had that ugly OS X-ish look and the billion similies? I thought it was spymac or resexcellence. All I'm saying is keep it nice and clean like it is right now. Don't go nots with the ********, like spymac does. Yuck.

it's pretty close to one of effgee's old mockups. so all new colors, all new graphics, and a very spiffy menu system for all the NN sites.

In that order.

I think there was a server error of some kind and it was forgotten about. No worries though. An e-mail has been sent to the technical staff.

It seems traffic is down quite a bit because of the current crop of "bugs." I know I am less likely to post not knowing 100% my post will go through.

I think they don't want to give MS a chance to copy it, so yeah.

for the change over you should make the new theme a theme option for a month so member can test it out and find any bugs in it while this current theme remains the defualt. MacRumors did that orginally and made the old theme a option for those that didn't like the new one. Just a thought. Kinda spending all my time over there nowadays. Could help in the change over.

I'm guessing the redesign has been done for months. Now they're working on the time machine so we can have it sometime in 2005. Can we have 3Ghz G5s too?

Well that sucks. With all the talented folks here (well-versed in this sort of thing), couldn't we find someone else to finish what was begun?

Really? Damn, when did I miss that one? Maybe we should just start a reality tv show about message board make overs and make The 'NN go first.

Still hopeful!
