The subject tells it all.I have an iMac DV 400MHz with 256MB of Ram (+peripherals)
with OS 9.04 witch uses 44MB of memory after
booting.I heard of other people who use only
30 or even 25MB of ram.How can you do that in
OS 9.04?I sure have disabled many extensions ans control panels.But who cares I am getting use to it.

I am using 43 megs with a trimmed System Folder, 128 RAM and VM set to 129.

It all depends on your configuration.
Also, the more RAM you have, the more the OS will use.

I have 224MB of ram and my system uses 37,4MB. My Mac is 8600 upgraded with a Newer G3/400 card. When my mac boots it loads 25 extensions and control panels. Virtual Memory is on (225MB).

at this moment my iBook is eating 49.6M RAM with six app's up and it has been running for about 8 hours now, would've been running longer than that but i am always playing around with stuff/widgets that require a restart to take effect... i never use VM, it is a real waste of time, a pig in a poke, a real joke...

sure, of course everyone knows that VM knocks the sysheap down considerably and VM degrades preformance in ways you may or may not be aware of... some app's need VM, most abhor it... buy more RAM and get used to it...
OS X will chew even more RAM!

i know of NO power-users that use VM unless some silly app requires it... period.

iMac like all modern Macs has 4MB ROM in RAM. You can also reduce the default disk cache (8MB w/ 256MB) down to 4MB w/o noticeable difference in performance, though why when you have 256? which is what I have on my b&w.

It's mute. An OS uses RAM, RAM is plentiful and cheap ($1.14/MB).

9.0.4 on my iMac 350 uses 37.3 MB RAM, with 128 MB real RAM and VM set to 256 (that's 128 more).

So you aren't going that badly. Actually, I find that the system uses far less RAM with VM on . I tried turning it off once, and it used 55 MB (!).

Oh, and FYI, my extensions folder has 221 items, and my control panels folder has 47.

If only iMac had more DIMM slots.That would be great.I want 512MB of memory and I want it NOW!!!!!But I can comprimise with 384MB of memory.And for those who forgot..If only iMac had more DIMM slots.

very much trimmed OS9.0.4 w/VM off running at 45Megs w/a lot of Cache due to 384 Megs of RAM. at 256 RAM, my OS probably will run at 40 Megs or so. Currently, with VM on, it runs at about 30 megs.

my recommendation: disable all the CP and extension thats not "essential," not too many fonts, and clean the Preference folder every-so often. Also, rebuilding DeskTop files may trim as much as 5 megs off of RAM consumption. Oh, kill as many of the background apps as you can, either with MacArmyKnife, or other utilities, and keep it killed. (ie Time Sync. Only place that extensions folder when you NEED to sync, then launch the Date/Time CP. Disable it afterwards.) Right now, the Only bkgd app I run is Control Strip.

Under OS9 I'm sitting comfortably at 24M used...granted I've only gotten around to installing P-Shop so far. Something tells me I can kiss that nice low 24 buh-bye.

Although under 8.6 I did trim a nice amount off by using Suitcase instead of having a whackload of fonts loading up with the system. I'd assume the same goes w/OS9.

OS 9.0 (I've been too lazy to upgrade) is currently using a bulky 65 MB! (as soon as I close Netscape it should drop ~15 MB).
the System Folder is 320 MB.Biggest offenders:
INITs: 112 MB for 533 items
Help: 52 MB for 1300 items (I had no idea this was so big, I shall delete it promptly)
Prefs: 34 MB for 1600 items
...(several uninteresting things in here)...
CP's: 52 items, only 13.5 MB. not so bad.

OS9, everything I've ever wanted to use installed (IE, NS, Office, Global Village Fax Centre, etc), 20.5 mb used upon startup. 192 mb RAM, RAM Doubler on. It can go as high as the 60s when I have all my internet apps up and running (ICQ, NS, OE, SoundJam) but generally drops back down to around 22 after it's all shut down.

Mac OS 9.0.4 uses 25MB Ram for games (pared down extension set, no other shortcuts) I have 192MB physical Ram in total.

My powerbook 400 (pismp/g3) with 192MB RAM and trimmed system folder, and VM on takes 19.5MB. OS9.0.4 /w RAM Doubler set t o File mapping only.

A full system folder on the powerbook (all my third party things on), and VM, takes 35MB-39MB. OS9.0.4

My G4 400 w/ 256MB, and VM on. Full system folder, takes about 40-45MB average. Sometimes 50MB. OS9.0.4 This one is Apple's VM (cant use RAM doubler)

I have 192 MB installed, and my computer still crawls.. Oh wait... im using Win 98

My iMAC DV 400 operating on 9.0.4 is fully loaded with Office 98, Canvas, FileMaker Pro, Virtual PC, etc... I was told that the RAM is less is Virtual Memory is turned on. My RAM requirements were 40MB+ w/o VM and went down to about 30MB w/VM.

Even though I dislike VM, it does free up some physical RAM which allows for larger RAM applications such as Photoshop or Virtual PC to operate more effectively.

I don't know why, but it seems to work.

9.0.4 on my iMac 266 with Virtual Memory set to 97MB takes up 26MB.

remember, the more physical RAM you have, the more will be automatically allocated to Cache. (I think 8 MB of the RAM consumption for my machine is Cache...)

finally last night took the time to upgrade to 9.0.4 and clean out my Extensions a little. RAM consumption down to 52 MB from 62 MB.
Question: people w/ really huge system RAM req's, are any of you using Reaper? how should System Heap expansion be set for the Finder? Does this correlate directly to increased RAM useage/performance?

I already have 8 allocated to Cache, and also resedited Finder to give it about 2 megs more i think, so that accounts for some... but not 64 megs worth (thats where it is now, VM off)!
