I just came up with a great way to measure the health of the economy. Every October here in the Bay Area (I don't know what its like elsewhere in the country), any and all vacant retail spots are taken up by a Halloween Super Store of some sort, selling a crap ton of overpriced Halloween goodies for the holiday.

Logically, the worse the economy, the more vacant retail spots are available, which means the more Halloween Super Stores that open for the month.

For obvious reasons, the Index will be compiled annually every October.

You could probably do the same with those Xmas decoration stores that pop up.

Doesn't work here.

There seem to be maybe two main Halloween crap retailers so extra empty stores just remain empty.

The malls around here still had a healthy mix of empty stores.

So, in a really bad economy, Halloween Super Stores will be open ALL YEAR ?

We could start by moving Halloween to the last Saturday of October.

Maybe it's time to finally introduce Kid's Day as an official holiday.

Some other ideas...

Big Sale Shopping Day
Consumption Day

We also need something like Jesus Day to offset Halloween.

Oh, I see great potential to help the economy by recklessly spending on Jesus Day.

We shall call it Christmas.

No, Christmas celebrates the birth of Santa. Jesus day will be a completely different kind of holiday.

I think Endless Shrimp day has some potential as well.

Shrimp & Biscuits day. We can celebrate it right after Independence Day.
