I just watched a Greek movie last night about a man and a woman who fall in love in a world where being gay is normal and being straight is considered morally wrong. Interesting commentary about how people treat others who are different. What if the tables were turned?

The movie is called Straight Story, and it was the biggest theatrical success of the year in Greece, selling over 400,000 tickets. It's out on DVD now, and has English subtitles available.

Translation of the synopsis from the website:

Get ready for the comedy of the year! Yanni and Sofia are two young adults who have the misfortune of... falling in love with each other. Their parents get headaches simply by hearing about their relationship, neighbors cross to the other side of the street when they approach, the "people in charge" want to close down the bar they have fun at, and the whole community would love to get rid of them and... "their kind." Why is this budding relationship being treated as a crime? What is their... problem? Because they are... straight!

Yanni and Sofia had the... bad luck of being born in a world different from our own, where the norm is for people to fall in love, marry and raise families with members of the same sex. Familes consist only of mothers or fathers and whoever dares to behave differently gets put on a "black" list!
Does this even remotely sound interesting to anyone else? I thought it treated the subject in a positive way.

Wow, what a refreshing concept for a movie!

Seriously, sounds clever. Of course, it would be the Greeks who would make such a movie, wouldn't it. I kid, I kid!

I'm trying to understand how "turning the tables" and catastrophizing heterosexuality is a "positive way" of dealing with it. In strict terms, it is a negative way. It is just turning the negativism around on someone else.

A positive way is to demonstrate a world where people actually love and accept each other. In other words, Will and Grace is more "positive" because it shows likeable people who are very different, and doesn't capitalize on fear and distrust to move the plot.
Do you want forgiveness or respect?

While reenforcing the notion that stereotypes are hilarious.

You don't think that stereotypes are hilarious? What's wrong with you? Are you some kind of humorless liberal? Are you really telling me that Borat didn't almost rip you apart with laughter? Those hilarious stereotypes!

Well, the movie is a comedy, so they can get away with certain things that a more serious movie could not. The point of the movie is to show how absurd it is to treat "different" people they way they are currently treated. It helps the non-gay viewer., through empathy with the characters, to see what it's like for gay people. And at the end of the movie (I don't want to give this away for people thinking of trying to watch it):

It would be funny if the movie ended up as a dream and the characters were actually gay in a straight world.

Reminds me of that weird John Travolta movie a few years back where whites were the minority. It did make you think, but the problem was it had John Travolta.

I think it was called "white mans burder" or something like that.

That is funny because Travolta is also gay.

Yes, I get you, I know a guy who is an evangelical christian and thinks that all homosexuals can and *should be* cured, maybe he can "help" you

It might be a great way to address the population problem - more gays = less procreation = happier planet!

Hm. It sounds like the premise of this movie was at least loosely inspired by MacNN. I think we should start a class action suit for royalties.
