I setup my two Macs to allow one to be controlled by the other via Apple Remote Desktop. With ARD I could watch the other Mac while it was being used, move the mouse while the other user was moving it (would throw them off a bit), or take total control over the Mac. I wanted that same capability (to do updates) on the wife's Windows laptop via Remote Desktop Connection v2.10 (comes w/ Office 2011) and it boots the current user when I connect. Not exactly what I wanted. My question is what protocol does Apple use with ARD to enable it to do what it does? It is VNC or something propriety? Will VNC do what ARD did?

Windows RDC doesn't behave like ARD, unless there is some hack I'm not familiar with it. So your experience is normal. RealVNC has a free version for Windows and works fine.
