I think keeping this community alive on Reddit is a good idea, and to that end I have created a new subreddit, https://www.reddit.com/r/macnnforums/. I have done this because I want this community to continue, and there is some concern that the existing subreddits have been created by and are solely moderated by Ca$h.

The issue is that Ca$h is known to be very controversial.

However, I can also be rather opinionated and (hopefully to a lesser degree) controversial.

So here is what I propose: I turn over the subreddit to someone(s) the community views as (mostly) universally reasonable- assuming that person(s) is(are) interested. It would be ideal if there were a collection of mods, and someone with CCS skills, at least for the initial setup, would be very welcome.

I would do this under a mutually agreed set of principles. Here are some I suggest:

No moderation outside of prohibiting posts that rise to the level of genuine threat. Name calling, even with dirty words, is not enough to cross the line. Physical threats, doxing (on any revelation of real world details) etc. should be dealt with immediately.

My belief is that community moderation via up vote/down vote will be enough to keep things to a level of discourse than I am comfortable with.

My nominations for level-headed, all-around good guy moderators include:

Andi*Pandi
OreoCookie
Subego

Let me be clear, I don't want to control this- I want to participate only. If there is a better way of going about it, I'll support it 100%.

Any thoughts?

It works for thousands of random people commenting on linked content. It's horrible for a few people having a single discussion.

Desktop Reddit is (and has always been) intolerably messy. Mobile is much cleaner.

What would a subreddit mod do other than spam cop?

This is a serious question. I'm assuming they won't remove or delete (non-spam) posts. Post removal is very un-MacNN.

Basically, lock threads which get out of control?

We may want to consider banning politics.

reddit's formatting is arcane and wilfully obtuse.

Find a decent hosted board and set up there. It's not like it's going to be bandwidth/traffic heavy.

NN is run on vB, I'm sure it could be ported over somewhere. Although, I think vB is up to version 5 now.

Is there a better format to contain 20,000 comments in different conversations regarding a single link?

The problem with Reddit is that its nested comments are very difficult to read. That's mainly why I avoid the place.

Most people on Reddit hate Reddit, too. You'd fit right in.
